4R70W output shaft

'00 5.0 in an '82 Volvo
I have hit a wall in using an Explorer 302/4R70W in an old Volvo. Need a drive shaft slip yoke that will accept the 1310 u-joint for clearance reasons.

The Explorer uses a 1.6" barrel and has never been made with the 1310 yoke. Previous Ford C4 transmission used a 1.5" barrel and used the 1310 joint in some applications.

Will an old Ford slip yoke fit the Explorer output shaft?

Is there a bushing or seal that the barrel needs to match up with?

Found an '87 Cougar 3.8L V6, 2.75" tube drive shaft that had the C4 28 spline slip yoke the same length as my 4R70W and with 1310 u-joints.

Now, the only issue is the ground barrel diameter difference between the 1.6" Explorer and 1.5" Cougar.

Anyone got an opinion of whether the 1.6" spring oil seal will be affective on the 1.5" barrel?
 






Are you asking if an oil seal with a 1.6" inner diameter will properly seal a transmission output shaft with an external diameter of 1.5"?
 






That would be a costly "trial" (timewise). It might seal initially, but I think will leak soon after.
 






Yeah, the 1.6/1.5" seal is the question of the day.

Due to drive tunnel clearance I cannot use the 4.6" rotating diameter 1330 slip yoke. The 3.5" 1310 is even tight and may require a little denting. Considered lowering the trans a little but that blows up the u-joint angle. The 1.6" 4R70W slip yoke apparently has never been made with a 1310 yoke. My look up of the shaft seal shows a different OD of the C4 vs 4R70W.

I'm sure you can find a 1.5" seal if you look around. I don't fully understand what you're doing but it would be a huge waste of time if it needed to be replaced immediately.
 






The answer

Here is the answer which contains some great information perhaps helpful to engine swaps within the Explorer line. Very helpful web site.

"Many AOD-E/4R70W units (especially later and wide ratio units) use an extension housing with a larger output bushing. This housing accepts a slip yoke with a larger outside diameter. This is not a major problem, as the slip yoke or extension housing can be changed and all output shafts share the same 28-spline profile as an AOD or C-4 transmission. An AOD-style extension housing can easily be bolted onto an AOD-E/4R70W. The large bushing housing bears a casting number beginning with "F3LP" for the standard length and "F3UP" for the long unit. The small standard length housings are marked with either "F2TP" or "E0AP". The small bushing long version is marked as "E0TP" or "E0LP" and is probably only used with the AOD transmission."
