Hey guys!

I'm not sure if the governor in my 4R70W is sticking or not but heres the scenario:

The trans would not shift to the next gear sometimes and i would need to either let it rev to around 4500-5000 rpm to shift and let off on the gas. It would do this in all of the gears from 1st to OD.

When this happens, i just turn off the truck and restart it and everything goes back to normal  I don't know what the heck is going on and I cant find any info here yet that is similar in my case and my type of transmission.

This does not actually happen all the time but it has happened about three times already in the span of 4 months.

Let me know if you guys have any thoughts!

Thanks!

hasnt happened again but i'd still like to know possible diagnoses.

Someone yell at me if I'm wrong, but that's a computer-controlled transmission with no governor. The PCM controls the shifts, and wisdom from the forum would say you probably have a bad TPS sensor.

If you have a 'check engine' light, get the codes read and let us know. You have a second gen with a V8, right?

yep, 2nd gen v8.

nope, no CEL or codes. I do have a "custom tune" from james @ henson performance so I'm not running the oem program.

Mine also does this, new TPS and a henson tune.

Do you think we need to reload the tune or refresh it somehow?

No idea, I went through different test tunes and even had him change some transmission options .. still the problem persists. I think these trannys have a small flaw, I heard about this issue on an f150 forum also. Slamming into gear at high rpm, unless let off gas or something.. mainly aggressive driving or WOT, but sometimes normal driving.. also get a small thud like a downshift around 20mph when slowing.

I've noticed that it has been shifting quite hard too after installing the tune.

I hope someone with extensive knowledge on our trannys chimes in before something breaks.

The guy who installed my shift kit said it was due to fluid pressures being wayy too high because of the tune, I told James this and he sent me a tune to fix it.. unfortunately I still have this issue. Everyone else on the forum hasn't been too much help with this problem, no one really knows. Even stock programming at this point doesn't solve the issue. It shifts great until the computer gets used to everything.

reviving this old thread as the problem still persists.

out of the blue after stopping at an intersection, it would shift at high rpms at all gears and sometimes i hear a thud like sound. almost like a heavy piece of metal dropping on cement kinda sound accompanied with a hard shift.

No CEL's , no flashing O/D.

What could it be?

I'll have to update you after my rebuild. (Lost my reverse due to other sorts of abuse)

If it fixes it, that'll be awesome. Although mine was never as bad as yours.. but it is annoying having this problem on my 1-2 when I wanna be more aggressive with it.

Does anyone have any follow-ups or ideas on this issue? I have a bone stock X (5.0 AWD) with no tune, and I'm having this same problem. Usually a re-start cures the problem for a few days, but it's getting to be a common occurrence.
