Ok, well as some of you may know, I have been having an on-going battle with my 91 X's tranny. It would not shift 1-2 until I let off the gas, coast for a few seconds then when i pressed it back down, it would shift. Anyway, I was told to check and andjust (if needed) the kickdown cable. That is fine. Then I replaced the Vaccuum Modulator Valve, and the problem still persists. So, my next thought was to replace the governor. So, I call Autozone and they say its discontinued, or they cant order it. One of the 2. Anyway I call a rather trusted mechanic and ask him to get me a Governor for it. When he asked what the problem was, I told him, and he said it wouldnt be the governor because the governor wont let it shift at all? Is this true? Mine will shift, but I have to let off the acclerator to get it to. So is he right? Or should I try replacing it? ANY help is appreciated! :exp:

From what I have heard,

It is the governor, in that the governor is sticky.

True if "broken" it wouldn't shift, but if it was "sticky" it would act like yours does.

Stay tuned here for more expert advice, but I have heard this before.

PS: I used Lucas Tranny Fix on my 92 a couple months back and the tranny has been fine since, almost good in fact.

Joe.

Should I try doing the Governor first before I put the Lucas in?

Well, I imagine there is a school of thought that the Lucas can help the Governor, and the 1st - 2nd shift improved after I added Lucas.

Search around here and look for cleaning the governor or sticky governor.

Good luck.

Joe.

Valve body issues! I had same issues on my 94 a4ld MANY times. search for glacier's a4ld valve body rebuild thread, good luck , Jon

Mine does that when it's cold. and it doesn't wanna down shift at a stop. ONLY when cold. it won't hurt anything. in the tail housing should be the problem. It's one of the deals, that you shouldn't worry with it untill it's time to fix the A4LDE. (which is a good transmission as long as you don't abuse it!) does yours do it cold or all the time?

Like I said before, a sticking governer can cause the delay you are experiencing with your A4LD. It could also be the VB as well, but I would start with the governer as it doesn't require the skill that a VB rebuild does. The mechanic is only half right. As mentioned by someone earlier, a broken governer will not allow the shift to happen at all, while a sticking governer will cause the delay that you are experiencing. IMHO, replace the governer and see what that does for you. If you do a SEARCH of the threads you will find information on how to replace/clean the governer on the A4LD. If that doesn't work, then I would suggest either reading up on glacier's A4LD VB rebuild diary and doing it yourself or having the entire transmission rebuilt by a competant tranny shop with all of the updates while you are having the VB done. If it were me, I would PM glacier and work something out on sending him your tranny so he can work his A4LD magic on it! ;) Hope this helps :)

Thanks you guys. I really appreciate all of you helping me out! I'll try tackleing the governor first. Then If the problem persists, i will be getting in touch with Glacier!

Oh, one more thing? Should I go ahead and give the Lucas Tranny Fix a chance? Would that unstick the valve-body and/or governor if they are indeed sticking?

If the governor is stuck, it means that some sort of debris is jamming it. The Lucas stuff is good at swelling seals, and slowing down leaks, but will not remove whatever is jamming that weight from moving properly.

Lucas is about the best stuff I've ever even heard of. Even though It didn't fix my sticking problem. Just my $.02 worth.

Ok, looks like I'll have to dive in and check it out. What is the likelyhood that itss the Valve Body? How hard is that to fix?

I am going to call it the gov also. I have to do the same thing. Getting the gov isn't an easy job though. You have to have to disconnect the drive lines, pull the brush guard and drop the transfer case. Once that is done, you have to pull the output shaft housing off the tranny. Once that is done, then you can pull the gov. The transgo and superior VB kits come with new springs for the gov, but only the superior kit offers a return spring to help it keep from getting stuck. That spring is not in the transgo kit though.

I do want to know what will the 35mm weight will do for me over the 30mm one. Can anyone help here? Thanks, Mark

There is an even bigger weight from Ford, I think it's 38 MM, but the Sonnax part should be good enough. The heavier part has less of a chance of binding. Sonnax has redesigned many OEM parts to improve upon them. If they made their part 35 MM, then use it.

Well, it also has a pretty big delay going into reverse too. That is why my friend suggested the Valve Body. Oh, and I drove it longer today. 1-2 shift is the only one it has problems with. It does the rest (including O/D) just fine. Do you still go with Governor as the culprit?
