'01 XLS Auto/Overdrive AWD v6
Both 4wd indicator light began flashing. Selector switch in in normal "Auto" position.

37k miles on the truck (just turned and the flashing may of started right at the 37k mark. They flash/blink 6 time slowly ever two minutes.

Called Ford and they said, "Oh... when can you bring it in?" I said what does it mean and they said it could be any one of ten things and they needed to plug it into the computer.

Anyone have this happen before? With it being 37k miles I kinda figured it was a pre-programmed service code (I hope). I do use the 4wd a lot and I'm sure it is in need of service.

Any help would be appreciated.

The flashing of the 4wd lights means that the GEM (generic electronic module aka computer) has detected a problem with the Control Trac system. There are several things that could cause the flashing lights, the GEM will store DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) that will point to the problem. They can plug the scanner into the Data Link Connector which is behind a cover in the dash below the steering column.

The flashing is not "pre-programmed" to occur at a specific time or mileage. I have over 89k and mine has not flashed yet.

Although there are several causes possible, some board members have had good results by cleaning the driveshaft speed sensors which are located at the rear of the transfer case.
