I just purchased a 2002 Explorer XLT 4WD. When I start it, the 4X4 Low light comes on and goes out but not the 4X4 High. When I try to put the 4WD on it does not seem to work. I've read about changing out the ECM, but it seemed like everyone had the same issue with none of the 4WD dash lights coming on at the start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm definitely not a mechanic but am fairly handy and could replace this myself as it sounds easy. Thanks for any help on diagnosing and where to buy the ECM if needed.

So when you start the engine, both 4hi and 4lo lights come on, but 4hi stays lighted? Or the 4hi light never comes on?

What does this mean, try to put it in 4wd? Are you trying to switch to 4hi or 4lo? Or are you pressing the 4auto button?

Thanks :)

4wd issues

When I turn it on the 4lo dash light comes on and goes out but the 4hi never does come on. When I try to put it in 4lo or 4hi no lights come on so I assume it isn't working. I don't think the 4auto is working either. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hmm... Well, with 4auto you won't see a light; with 4lo, you need to be in neutral and you'll see a light; and with 4hi you should see a light... You should hear minor noise when shifting into 4lo, and when shifting out.

I read that in the manual. No lights come on for 4hi or 4lo., no noise when I push 4hi or 4lo.

Wow! Then I'd agree that yes, your 4wd system needs to be serviced. It might be something minor, but a technician needs to look at it...
