This is for a friends Moms Explorer. She has a 97 Xplorer XLT V6 4wd w 87k. She told me that when driving the 4wd high and 4wd low occasionally blinks on/off both at the same time once in awhile. I drove it and it does come on for a extended amount of time and than goes back off. I dont want her to take it to ford cause they charged her $35 to change the rear light bulbs! My guess is that it is a short in the wire behind the dash. Any suggestions thxs!

It's likely the transfer case speed sensor(s). Ford can diagnose this for you, and then you can go and have the labor done at a reasonable place.

There are some threads here about that blinking. They blink in a certain pattern, to tell you what is wrong. Use the search feature on here for "flashing/ blinking 4x4 lights...." or something to that effect.

Try to reset the computer turn the key from off to run 5 times then start it, see if that works or remove your battery cable and let it sit for a hour.

I just had this happen with my 2000. Took it in lucklily still under warranty and they had to reset the GEMs. Don't know what impications are if you just let it go :)

That was the diagnosis on both my explorer and my expedition which had the same symptoms. It was repaired under warranty and the problem never came back.

ok i will tell her this stuff and see if that is the problem. I will first try to reset comp. since its free. If that doesnt work than i will tell her about the sensors? Do you know how many there are and about how much they run by chance. thxs. for the help:D

A couple of days after mine started blinking I was having new transfer case internals installed.
