4wd low but no 4wd auto

96' Ford Explorer XLT 4x4
I have that P.O.S. control trac 4x4. Yesterday I found a lil muddy place to play in. When I was stuck I put it in 4wd auto and when I gave it gas the back tires spun but a spinning grinding sound came from the front and the front wheels only barely spun then stopped while the back tires were continuesly spinning....the sound it made scared the $h!T out of me. So I put it in 4low and it crawled right out...need help :(

ps - sorry bout the run-on sentences :p:

thanks izwack...anybody know what my slipping grinding noise might be from the front in while in 4wd auto?
 






The Center Axle Disconnect not locking. You'll need to check the operation of the vacuum solenoids, as well as chase the vacuum lines to be sure they aren't leaking. The vacuum motor on the CAD could be bad as well.
