Most likely the shift motor. common problem. you could possible fix it yourself or a local shop probably could do it for not too much.

doe a search for the shift motor, common problem and easy to clean (and free ;) ). A shop would just want to replace it with a new one and charge you out the butt.

I got it done (actually my dad did while i was at school) at a local shop for real cheap. I think it was like $30. But that's also the shop I bought the truck from back in '98.

If your like me and short on cash, try this. I had a 94 with the same problem. Get a small hammer and get under the truck where the transfer case shift motor is.(back of transfer case). It's a small electric motor the size of a soda can. Start tapping on it while someone else pushes the 4x4 button at the same time. It should go in. It worked for me.

tapping it will sometimes make it engage, and sometimes it'll work after that. But, chances are, even if you get it to work you'll have to have somebody hit the motor every time you want 4wd. That's not very handy when you're sitting on the frame in mud. You'll be a lot better of to get it fixed or fix it yourself like code said.

location

where is the shift motor located and what does it look like??? thanks

If it goes in when you tap it, it probably just needs cleaning. The Ford dealership told me this is a very common problem. Try removing it and cleaning before you replace it.

I have te same problem on my 94 limited and also on my 89 ranger I had in college, In trying to get at the push button box To check for a fuse in the back I destroyed my stereo face and found no answers but I am guessing it may be the solenoid on the transfer case. Also I have had rare occasions where my 4x4 light on the push button box will come on for a period of time and go off again for no apparent reason.

I just replaced my transfer case motor today. I got a rebuilt from Auto Zone for $150 plus $40 for the core. It only took about 20 minutes and the only issue is the 2 wire pins you need to remove from the connector. You need to remove the red insert that is inside the connector and reinsert the pins into the new connector.
