Has anyone had this same problem I have? When I want to engage in 4wd, it doesn't want to. In order for me to engage it, I have to disconnect the battery for a couple minutes then engage it again. Then when I start up the truck and engage the 4wd, voila, it works!!!! In the last month also when I have been driving the O/D cut off on me. I was thinking "WTF" and tried to cut it back on but it wouldn't, so I pulled over, cut off the car, and cranked the engine again and it was working like a champ. Like it never happened. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Could it be electrical, or tranny??

Could be a problem with the GEM module... Effects a lot of the electronics on the Ex. Since you seem to be having trouble with different systems, I'd start there. They have been known to be bad, and there was a recall on them recently for '98's and 99's (and maybe '97's too)

man i sure hope that's the case. i just got a new one couple months ago, and now that i remember it, when i got it replaced when everything power started going haywire, that's when the troubles start. thanks for joggin my memory. they will get a nice tounge lashing if that's the case

I would hope that the GEM is what it is, unless you have an extended warranty. Ford's warranty on repairs is 12 month/12K miles so unless you have driven over 12K miles in the last couple of months it is still under warranty. If you don't have an extended warranty and it isn't the GEM it could cost you some $$.
