Hi, I have a chance to buy a 97 explorer for very cheap. great condition except for bad trans. It is a v6 with auto and 4wd. I believe this is an awd vehical. 4wd all the time. I would prefer to swap to a 2wd. Is this practical ? Im thinking sensors, wiring harnesses, maybe the ecu could be an issue with such a swap ? also, what cars/trucks and years would work for swap ? any input appreciated. thanks

Define practical!
Are you thinking about gas mileage? Or, what is the reason you are thinking of doing this?

@glenfoltz
Practical? Maybe. Would I do it? Hell, no! First, AWD is a dang good system, little to go wrong. Second, I believe 2nd. Gens have a shaft speed sensor in the Transfer Case. Remove that, and the PCM will be confused, start throwing codes. If you really don't want the AWD, remove the front driveshaft, and use the Parking Brake to keep it from rolling when shut down on a slope.
Just my opinion. imp

I wanted the better gas mileage and the simplicity of the 2wd. Less to go wrong. I was hoping not to have to find to many parts. The more I read, the more Im beginning to realize, If I want a 2wd I better just buy one !
