4X4 busted??

My 92 Ex has 140K. Automatic with automatic hubs. When I push button to engage 4X4, I get no 4X4 light, and a grinding sound. The noise disappears when I let off of the gas. It feels like the front wheels are engaging but I guess I am not sure. My friend says auto hubs are crap and are probably at fault. My 4 wheeling is limited. As I recall, I have only seen the 4x4 light illuminated a few times a couple of years ago. The light on the push button comes on but not the light below the tach. Any suggestions to help diagnose this?

This happened to my 92 about 3 years ago. I took it in and they said it that the 4x4 motor wasn't engaging completely and the grinding are the hubs. Mine were powder. I had them replace the motor and hubs. Been working fine every since. Engaging, Disengaging with no problem.
