4x4 does not work

thanks for your help

my 4 wheel drive was busted so i turned to the vast knowledge of this site. this thread especially, i bought a 4X4 CM module from directfordparts.com, it came two days later and took 10 minutes to replace the old one. 4X4 works great. thank you to all. I can't believe the ford hasn't issued a recall for this part, i am going to write them a letter, everyone else who has had this problem should also write a letter. thanks again, Dan.

Does anyone know for sure if the new module would have to be programmed by the dealer?

Can this same module burn out on a 2000 explorer 2dr sport as well?
I have auto,4x4hi,4x4low everything works but 4x4low light doesnt come on nor does it go into 4x4low i did notice that my rear defogger and fog light buttons are not illuminated as well but defogger goes on when pressed but fog lights dont work. my 4x4 switch and rear wiper ar eilluminated so i am not sure.

i was mistaken it has 2wd, 4x4 auto, 4x4low the 2wd works and the 4x4 auto selection works just not 4x4low

New 4x4 module did the trick & no set up needed

 Just letting you know the new module worked like a charm. 15 minute install, only $155 from millenniumford in Burien, WA on the internet. No additional settings needed.

My challenge was 4x4 light blinked 3, 4 7 and 10 times at random when driving. Load kerchunk noise on low speed turns. Back wheels almost skipped at low speeds. Battery lost charge after a week or so, replaced it but it still drained everynight. Put new part in three days ago and it fixed everything:)

Im having the same completely dead 4wd system problems. The thing is everyone on this thread seems to have an '01 or '02 and mine is a '93. can anyone tell me where I would find the 4x4cm in my vehicle? theres a small unmarked green and black box behind the glove box where everyone is referring to but im not sure if its what im looking for. Also is the part number the same?
Thanks!

I doubt that the '93s have a seperate 4X4 controller, but bon't know for sure. You should probably check out this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123542
Good luck!

What are symptoms of bad control module?

--'02 XLS-- How about this situation: my 4 low only flashes and will not actually engage 4 low, but the truck will periodically, (seems like it's only when it's been run for a while), put itself into 4 high and do the normal clunk and hop when turning tightly? 4x4CM?? Transfer case flipping out?

4X4 not working

Hello all...

First post here and I have to say this is a GREAT site! I hope to spend a lot of time here to fix any and all issues on my Explorer...

Ok so down to facts...

I have a 2002 Explorer...

4X4 inop
No lights
No clicks
No ticky, No Laundry!!

I checked all 3 fuses, 1 5A under dash, 2 20A under hood, all good!
I took it to the local dealer and they charged me $50.. to troubleshoot it and said the module was bad and they would order one for a mere $475.00. Damm hard to refuse such a deal, Eh???

Anyway, found the link to the parts dealer in Vegas (Oh how I wish I was in Vegas!!!) and ordered a replacement for $155.00. Just doesn't get any better than that!!!

Here's my dilemma...

Existing Module info;

Ford Part # 1L24-7H473-AG
Vendor # M799G
Motorola Model # 01MU152B06
Date Code 01211
Serial # 21396939

I ordered a replacement from Direct Ford Parts and I received this item (1L2Z7E453A). I have sent them an email asking if this is the correct replacement for the existing unit, but I guess their busy as I haven't received a reply. I hope someone here will know if this is ok to install?

Please let me know and if so, I will install it and hopefully this will fix it!!

Thanks soo much for the great site and from what I see, EXCELLENT help from all the members!

Take care! :D

Ditto

Figured out the module was the problem in mine - ordered on-line for abbout 170 (incl. shipping) - installed in 10 minutes - 4x4 works again.

Since this issue seems like a safety issue (loss of 4 wheel drive) and the new control module does address the fact that most of these problems occur simply when the battery is disconnected, I have sent a complaint to the National Highway Safety Administration regarding Fords refusal to issue a recall for the control module. If anyone else is interested, they can do the same at the following URL: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/Consumer.cfm

If enough people complain, just maybe they will launch an investigation. It won't do any of us who have already had to pay for this obvious engineering failure any good, but it might help others who haven't yet.

Recall issue!

It's still possible to get reimbursed even after a recall. All we need is a class action lawsuit!

By the way, does anyone have an answer to my post above? I did finally get answer from Ford parts and they assured me it's the right part. I installed it, but the 4X4 still doesn't work. No lights, no clicks, NOTHING! I checked all fuses, left the battery disconnected for 15 minutes after I installed the module, but it's still not working. Any ideas where to start??

Thanks

Install or pull it and install again. Check for bent pins or wires that may have broke or pulled loose during install. You should hear an audible click when connecting the plugs. I can't remember if the two plugs are differrent but if not make sure you didn't cross them.

module problem

Did you disconnect the negative battery post before you disconnected it?

control module

I've been reading all these posts and decided to follow along. I ordered a new module from directfordparts (about 170.00 total) and it came today. Took about 10 minutes to install but my 4x4 works now. Just want to say thanks for the great forum and all the helpful members here.

Hi, I just wanted to thank everyone involved with this thread. This forum saved me a lot of frustration and money. My 02 Explorer 4x4 is back, and I'm very grateful as I watch the snow fall again here in MA.
I used the directfordparts.com, but that is actually Gaudin Ford out in Las Vegas, NV they actually have an internet sales department. Just call 1-800-810-6596 and ask for internet parts department. I worked with Allen and he was fantastic, ensuring I received the right part and was eager to help. I also appreciated the fact that when answering my questions I didn’t get that usual ambiguous answer with the condescending tone like you get from most parts departments. Make no mistake their parts department and internet parts are two different animals. I informed him about this forum and told him that the word was out and has been out for sometime about directfordparts.com and that their prices were greatly appreciated especially at a time when our country is teetering on a recession.

BTW 4 years as a memeber and this is my first post on this forum!

Now my next project is to suck all the info I can to spring lift my 02.

Thanks again everybody!

Here's a good one for you 4x4 CM replacements. I have a 2002 EB and out of the blue the 4x4 would not engage into High or Low. Here in Manitoba, Canada, the temperature gets a little cool during December - February, anyways, when the temperature inside the vehicle would warm up, the 4x4 would engage. I had the Truck in at a Local Ford Dealership and they at first thought it was the switch on the Dash. Got the call to pick it up, started the truck, pressed the switch and low and behold the 4x4 engaged, thought it was fixed, NOT.. Disengaged it before I left their lot, got a couple of miles down the road, try to engage it again, would not work. Brought the Truck back and they than replaced the 4x4 CM, this ended up fixing the problem. But for whatever reason, the temperature inside the vehicle had something to do with allowing the orignal CM to work until it was to cold.

Bumping and old thread I know, but where is the 4x4 module located. I too am having the same issue in my '02. I'm guessing mine has died. About to order a new one from directparts.

4x4 CM Location

Hi A1C, the CM is located in behind the Glove Box, it is a black Electronic boxy looking thing that measures about 4" x 5 1/4", it might even say 4X4CM on it. Should only have two Fasteners holding it in place with two Elecronic Plugs, plugged into it. Hope this helps.

Has anyone tried the new module on explorers where only the 4x4 low doesn't work? Thats the problem I have with mine. Also, everyone in this thread seems to have an 02. Did they correct the problem with the '03s?
