4x4 help

when in auto 4wd, will the 4wd light on the dash come on when it kicks in? i was driving around today in some slippery snow and ice, and i was sliding around. i put it into 4HI and the light on the dash came on, but i don't think anything changed and it felt the same as when in auto.

also, is there a proper technique for putting it into 4HI? like can i do it while driving, or should i put it in park or turn it off or what?

4Auto will not have any lights to display engagement. You can just shift into 4hi at any time under reasonable speeds.
