4x4 help

so i think my 4x4 isnt working
but whenever i press the button sometimes it turns on, and sometimes it doesnt, is this the switch or the module? i hear the module clicking about 5 or 6 times everytime i press it. do i need to be like in drive and moving for it to work or what? it seems to work fine when im stopped at a light but when im parked trying to #### with it, it doesnt go on
and do i need to have the 4x4 on for 4x4 low to work?

The clicking indicates the switch is working and sending a signal to the 4x4 computer in the rear hatch. Check out the 4x4 troubleshooting info at the top of this forum for detailed info on diagnosing the problem.

haha thats the second referral i got to that thread.
i just want to know if the 4x4 should turn on when you press it or if there needs to be a bunch of circumstances that make it turn on since its all electronic, (being in park as opposed to drive or something)

I think you just need to be stopped is all. If I remember correctly. Just keeps stuff from tearing itself up.

and the 4x4 button can be pressed whenever but the 4x4 low has to be in N and then reverse and then it should lock, right?
and does ithave to be in 4x4 to go in 4x4 low?

My Explorer has a manual transmission so I don't know about having to have it in "N" then go to "R." However, I do know you have to be in 4X4 before going into 4X4 low.

i was told you needed to put it into 4x4 and then reverse so the hubs lock
but that may just be with manual hubs

You do not need to go in reverse to lock or engage the hubs.
To unlock the hubs, after turning off the 4x4, you reverse the direction you were last going while in 4X4, approx 15-20 feet of travel is all you need.

Whoever told you that you had to go in reverse in order to lock your hubs may want to rethink what they think they know. I agree with Fixxxer.

Sorry for the confusion. I had thought the troubleshooting thread was clear, but evidently it needs to be cleaned up some.. I have added the following information to the thread. As it implies you can simply press the 4x4 button at anytime and the system will engage or disengage 4x4 High (Shift on the fly engagement). On the other hand the 4x4 Low requirements are listed below. These requirements are to prevent driveline damage due to the enormous power (torque) generated in low.

4x4 High
To engage or disengage 4x4 High:

• Press the 4x4 button (anytime, nothing else required!)

4x4 Low
To engage or disengage 4x4 Low you must:

• 1st be in 4x4 high
• Transmission in Neutral
• Clutch depressed (manual transmission)
• Foot on Brake (mph<3)
• Now Press 4x4 Low
