So im driving in the 12 or so inches of snow we got yesturday and turn on good old 4 wheel drive but low and behold a whining noise. Its only when you let off the gas and coast, on the gas no noise, and as soon a i turn off the 4x4 no more noise. Just did the wheel bearings 3 days ago so i know those are good u joints seem tight any ideas.

thanks
nate

Actually a little noise is natural in a part-time 4wd. Could you discribe the noise a little more, such as vibrations, does it sound like it's coming from the wheels or diff?

Hah, mine does the opposite. I've been using mine non-stop the last couple days with all the snow. It makes a whirring (dunno how to describing it in text really, heh) noise that sounds like it's coming from right below me in the t-case, but only when I'm giving it throttle after it gets up past 20 MPH. It goes away when I coast. But it works perfectly so I'm not really concerned with it. It prolly needs fluid or a fluid change since I'm pretty sure it's never been changed before. The t-case takes the same fluid as the tranny, right? Is it hard to change out? Sorry, don't mean to hijack your thread, you just reminded me about it.

I would still suspect front u-joints -- they may just be dry and haven't become loose yet.

Did you check front diff fluid level? t-case fluid level?

It's completely normal.

t case fluid easy change 10 15 min job just mercron atf fluid like right around 2 quarts but dont quote me on the amount but pretty much the exact oppisite of what you have it feels and sounds like its right below me i was think maybe the double cardon is junk but i havent had a chance to really look at it the diff fluid looks good decently clean seeing as the previous owner prob never changed it im gonna rebuild that joint and change fluids to night see if that helps

I don't remember mine making as much noise on the highway as it does now. Is there any way to check the fluid in the t-case easily? I know Natedawg just told me how to do something with it.. but for some reason I can't understand his post.. lol

to check the fluid you have to take fill plug out. (it is on the rear of the t case) i believe stick like a q tip or something in the whole ideally the fluid should be like a rose pinkish color but the fluid level should be about even with or just below the bottom of that fill plug hole. it never hurts to change it while your under there.
