Has anyone ever heard of such a convversion.

I have read a bunch of posts partaining to bad 4 wheel drive engage button / transfer problems and I have one of the two not allowing me to shift into 4x4.

It'd be nice I think to have a shifter under the rear seat or somewhere..

Does sense this make?

Some first generation Explorers came with manually shifted transfer cases. The swap is easy. You just need to get all the parts from a donor Explorer or Ranger.

I have seen other options for electronic controlled transfer cases. One is to remove the shift motor from the transfer case and select the range by twisting the shaft in the transfer case with a vise grips. This is usually only done when the driver absolutely needs 4x4 since you have to get under the truck to go between 4x4 and 2wd.

The other method is to make an adapter that will fit the triangle shaped shaft in the transfer case, attach it to a stiff cable like a shifter cable, and run it up through the floor to a knob. You then twist the knob to select the range you need.
