OKay so i just fixed my shift motor and the plastic thing was mangled into a million pieces so i replaced it with a rubber one. Before i fixed the shift motor my car would go into 4x4 but then when i would click the button the relay would click twice and the lights would go out but i could still feel it in four. Well now i am having the same problems, i fixed the shift motor but now it still wont come out of 4. i think i got it out after driving around the block and backing up and then forward again, but it still fells like it might be engaged. Does anyone have any ideas what is going on and how i can fix this???

Sounds like it could be the hubs. I had a 92 Ranger that had junk hubs and I finally replaced them with Warn hubs and fixed all of my 4WD problems. Good Luck!

I have the same truck. My hubs would not disengage because they were full of axle grease. Perhaps the same thing is happening to you?

Pull off the wheels remove the hubs, and clean all the grease out of them with brake cleaner. then pop them back on, and give it a try.

alright thanks guys ill try that tomorrow and let ya know how it goes

You do know that you are supposed to back up 6' to disengage autohubs, don't you?

shoot, six feet i thought it was only like two or three. I feel pretty stupid, well ill try that tomorrow and see if that helps but im still goanna clean the hubs out they never have been in 16 years. Any other things i should know about, haha ?

okay so i took the hubs off and they werent really too bad. There was grease in there covering everything but it wasnt like gunked up everywhere like free flowing. So pretty much everything is fixed now with the 4x4, but i have one more question. When you are in 4x4 one pavement( i only went like 30 yards i know its bad) should the wheel be shimming and pulling back and forth?

What do you mean by pulling back & forth, wobbly like? Were you turning or driving in a straight line?

um your auto hub cap isnt on right,if the whell is pulling back and forth.(thus ingauging and disingauging) make sure you install it the way it came off.The cap has teeth in side and it has to line up our you'll blow the hub.It take some time and finnese to get it to seal right against the rotor; also there are retainer rings (usually 2 per hub i would get a new one for each stud) that go on the stud after you reinstall the hub. you can clean the hub out with brake cleaner.then fill them will atf when you reinstall.
if your gears are worn the spring will be popping out or the ring will be cracked. You could possibly have chipped a tooth but if you go to any ljy you'll find plenty off good replacements.

It happens whether i drive straight or take a corner but it is especially worse on a corner, but by pulling back and forth i mean like jerking back and forth.

Yea i was thinking that too but i think it was doing this even before i took them off. Sorry i have another question that might help us solve this. Since i reinstalled the hub and put my tire back on it is squeeking at a point every time the front right wheel makes a revolution and it was hard to tighten the lugs up cause the tire spun freely, is there a way to keep the tire from spinning freely?, and does it sound like i installed the hub back on wrong, cause i noticed it was really hard to get the teeth lined up perfect but i finally did, but i also didnt put it back in the same spot that it was if that matters, but i did get the teeth aligned.

Hand tighten the lug nuts then lower the jack slowly until the tire doesn't spin but the vehicle is still supported by the jack. Tighten the lug nuts, then lower it the rest of the way. You should probably have a mechanic look at your hub.
