4x4 Not Engaging

Hi,
Whenever I start the truck the 4x4 low comes on then goes out after a few seconds like it should. Now when I push any of my 4x4 buttons to engage the 4x4 while driving I get any indicator lights at all. Is there a way to troubleshoot the module and the transfer motor or could it be the cable between the motor and module. Can someone please help me out so I don't have to buy all these parts to get to the root of the problem because it gets pricey?

I have a 2000 explorer so this may not help much, but i had the same prob, no 4wd, but also accompanied by no power windows as well(only two things i know of that were not working) it is snowing here today and i want my 4wd so on my lunch break I did some research and found a few possibles, started with the easiest a fuse, #4 maxi on my truck, it was blown, happened to have a spare in the truck from an issue i had a few years back. Replaced now everything is functioning, hopefully not going to be a recurring issue. I have a few wires showing from some other things, maybe one got shorted, but it is all working now. hope this helps
