AWD is for the V8s.

4WD is for the 4.0 six cylinders, they also can come in 2WD.

There isn't actually a selection for 2WD on a 4WD truck. When you're not in 4WD High or 4WD Low you're in Auto which means when slip is detected the front wheels can get up to 30% traction.
If you have a 4wd vehicle you CAN have a LSD or locker.
My 4wd came from the factory with LSD.

He tell me that it was a special edition or something and even the garage dont know the engine in it they got problem fitting an alternator idk.

Anyways im sticking with stock diff and the 4wd run well in 3 feet + of snow

if there's a selector switch on the dash (on the left side of the radio bezel) it's a OHV or SOHC V6 engine. The V8's were only available in 2wd or AWD. As stated, there may be an AUTO setting on the selector switch. there were no other options offered by Ford for the Explorers. BTW, if it's a 2-door model (AKA Sport) it has a V6. to determine whether it came equipped with a LSD rear diff, check the axle code on the door sticker. for example, D4 indicate LSD 3:73 ratio. the front diff will be open (non-LSD). also research "the brown wire mod" on how to better control/disable the AUTO setting manually as this can be an annoying feature.

it a 45 open axle and a sohc on the engine cover :)

3.55 ratio

ok so we can disable the auto mod nice

i may add seen you own alot of that kind of truck

Any advice on the maintenance it an automatic with 300k Kilometer

The rear diff was never checked since new i heard they need 75-140w

Timing chain is all original

Tranny oil and filter was never changer except the leak we got with the cooler so we got to refill it almost completly so worth 1 refill almost ahah

Engine oil is synthetic but changed at like 40k km and since 5 years ago stuck with the same filter..... Gonna change it soon

Transfer case was changed i think.

That mostly what i know :)

Thank you for the help

Weak points with that truck are the timing chains and transmission. The rear diff takes 75W140 full synthetic (with Ford friction modifier if LSD) for front diff you don't need full synthetic. Changing the engine oil and filter regularly is critical for the SOHC engine. I'd suggest full synthetic oil every 5,000 miles, at most, and be sure to use a quality filter with an anti drain-back valve. As for the transmission, I'd drain the pan and change the filter, refilling with Mercon V. With that many miles on that trans without service, changing all the oil or doing a flush may kill the transmission in just a few weeks.

Been about a years + since the tranny leaked. still going strong even in deep snow 4x4 in low driving hard.

Idk i think i should just leave it like that maybe

For the filter im looking at the mobile 1 filter i do think they have the anti drain back valve.

Thank you :)
