My explorer is out of comission, big time...My first problem is my 4x4 is not working, I press the button, a light comes on, but it is not in 4x4? since I live in a wintery climate, this is an important matter to me. I think it could have something todo with my transfer case or the cpu not sure? any suggeestions? products, do it myself, get it done professionally?? Thanks in advance

try cleanin the shift moter..that's normal for it to get "gunked" up..

did you swap a SOHC in to your 94?..the SOHC dident come out till 97

ya sorry, it was almost impulse when I read the example of a signature. Where is the shift motor located?

on the t-case..just take it out and clean it up..hopefully this should work..the 4x4 system's in first gen's can be finicky..

hope this help's

Your shift case motor should be working fine, since the light is comming on.

Do you have automatic hubs up front? I would guess they are bad.

Sorry, this explorer thing is new to me..
where are the automatic hubs??

woo, we are starting with newbi..lol your 4x4 hub's are in the center of your rim's the auto's say "auto 4x4" manual ones you have to get out and lock them..im geussing you have manual's cause you have a XL..but who know's

EDIT: ok here's a pic that show's manual hub's..if your's look like this that mean's you have to get out and lock the hub's then press the 4x4 button
(dead links)

In the middle of your front wheels, is there just a solid piece that says something like "Automatic 4x4" or is there a round switch?

Ya I do have those
the back have the 0 with the / through it, the front have 4x4 written on it.

yeah, i still say it's the shift moter...

you have auto hub's then

Then you have auto-hubs. These wear out and go bad over the years, or just stop working from lack of use. A member here named Kris Guilbeaux rebuilds broken ones and sells them. You may want to contact him if you wish to keep the convenience of automatic hubs.

If you wanted to switch over to a more realiable form of hub, try a Search for "Warn manual hubs". This is about a $200 fix, but they will outlast your Explorer.

AK, the shift motor has to switch for the light circuit to be complete. If the light comes on, the shift has been made.

i would still clean all the connection's before droping $$ it's just the smart thing to do

does the front hubs have anything to do with the bearings? I just got the bearings replaced because they were dried up. so they are bran new

How do you include a picture into the post?

if this pic works, these are my hubs

Can I post a pic from my cpu??
