4X4 problem

The 4X4 on my 98 Explorer (EB) has been turning itself on. When it happens it has been when I have been backing up, then it stays on for awhile. The 4x4 switch is in normal...I have tried turning it to high and then off again, but it doesn't shut it off. While it is on, the 4WD High and 4WD Low lights on the dash flash off and on. Usually if I shut the truck off and leave it off a few minutes it seems to reset, only once has the 4x4 still been on when I restarted the truck. Anybody have this problem??

I have had the same problem with my 98 sport. I determined that it was a dirty sensor on the top of the diff. I romoved it and wiped it off and re-installed it. This seemed to cure the problem.
