I have a 93 XLT. When I push the 4by high button, i get a click from a switch in the panel in the cargo area where the stock jack is. I was told by a fellow another member of the message boards that with the ignition on, if i push the button on the bottom of the switch I can get a better idea of what is broken on the 4x4. I was told the if the little LED light stayed on it was the relay (not sure exaclty what he means) and if it blinked it was the transfer case motor, well the light stayed on (so its the relay). My question is, why is it when i push the 4by high button, i get a click in the back, but none of the 4x4 lights on the dash light up or even blink? Also, do you feel that the above mentioned way of testing the 4wd works?

Cisko,

I don't know if that is an accurate way to test it or not. However, we bought a totaled 91 Explorer for parts. The click you here in the back is from a relay that is located back there. That's about all I know.

The LED on the controler is about as reliable as a politician. From my experience they never tell you anything. Do a search about the subject and you will find several posts on this problem. I have explained how to fix this before and I am too lazy to do it again.
