Ok...so the shift motor is working...I can hear the "clunk" in the front end. The lights light up etc. I got under the truck...spun the axle...it locked...tried the right one...it locked?? Possible problems?

So whats the problem?

The 4wd does not work. Stuck in snow...rear tires spun...front ones didn't...which I then assumed was a hub problem, but then I checked and both axles locked after about 1/2 turn or so. Just looking for any other suggestions.

Maybe the hubs were frozen when you were in the snow, and when you got home to check them they were warm??? or just the cold cause any grease in the hubs to get sticky, I think I would check them real close , maybe clean them good?

but then I checked and both axles locked after about 1/2 turn or so.
Did your spotter check to see if they stayed locked when you were stuck? In other words, when you were stuck, were either of the front axleshafts spinning without the wheel spinning? Was the front driveshaft spinning?

I don't know if the shafts were spinning while stuck...I just know the tires weren't:) The rear of the truck was also sliding to the left side...

In 4x4 with open differentials only the tire with the least amount of traction will get power. Only vehicles with a locking differential, limited slip, etc. can spin both front tires at the same time. As Mr.Shorty was asking did you confirm BOTH wheels weren't moving? If the answer is you're spotter observed both front wheels not moving while the rear was then it indicates a bad hub. Although the hubs locked when you manually rotated the axle shafts one or both hubs are not staying locked under load.
