4x4 shift issues

I have a 2001 Sport Trac and if I turn the switch from 2w to 4H it seems a relay clicks and the transfer case engages in 4L. The 4 H light is on but it is definitly in 4L. I have to go through the whole neutreal and brake seqence to get it back to 2 H. Would this be positioning sensors in the Shift motor? If anyone has schematics for this system I would love to see them. Please help.
