Had trouble on and off with loosing all shift modes. I haven't rebuilt the motor yet, but plan to. When it fails to shift into 4x4 I would take the motor off, seams like just handling it would give me a temp fix. I suspect the stop is broken. I had it on the lift today for the radial arm bushings and removed the shift motor.

That got it working again, however, when I shifted to high range moving about 5 mph it shifted to lo range. I tried shifting out of high, into lo, back to high and the to 2 h.

It still only wants to shift to lo range when the high range button is selected.

Any thoughts? I suspect it's lost and I have read the thread on reset, but the procedure isn't quite clicking in my pea brain. it might once I actually take the motor apart.

Thanks

Took the shift motor off and tore in down. The only thing I saw was a lot of corrosion on the armature. Cleaned that up and so far so good. I was thinking about dumping this thing, but after replacing the radial arm bushings and fixing the 4x4 function I'm going to keep running it. 118k and the motor is really tight. Owned it for 10 years.

While on the rack I found a leaf spring shackle that's on it last legs. I'll get to that this weekend.

Thanks for all the great info provided here.

Did you shift into 4wd while in neutral?

Did you shift into 4wd while in neutral?

I cycled in and out of 4H while in neutral and while in D a dozen times or so. Also cycled in and out of 4L while in neutral. There was snow and ice still on the roads so I drove it 20 or so miles in 4H.

I'm surprised it switched to 4lo in D. I'm not sure what would cause that although like you had mentioned maybe the stop broke from being so cold and brittle.

It switched into 4lo while in drive before the rebuild of the motor. The stop looked ok, but I still rotated it 180 degrees.

I have not tested for switching into 4lo while in drive after the rebuild, but I will this evening when I get home.

Thanks

Interesting. I wish I could be more help but I'm stumped on that one.

Glad it got worked out! Did you just take it apart and grease it up or what?

Just took it apart, cleaned all electrical contacts, rotated the stop, greased it up and put it back together.

Sounds simple enough
