i took the actuator apart, cleaned it up, and still it is not working. so i pulled it out, put 12volts directly to the motor, and the thing was spinning fine. so from here i did all the necessary tests with the ohmeter, from dr. bobs thread, everything checked out as far as where i should have continuity and shouldn't have continuity. reinstalled it, wired it all up, and all i stilll hear is the clicking noise in the rear wheel well compartment. and still no 4 wheel drive!!!!!!! i am desperate, the northeast is being pounded by a nasty storm!!!! please assist in any way possible!!!!!!

I feel bad for you guys. I used to live in NH. Now I am in SUNNY AZ! Ha ha.... I just fixed mine. I cleaned up all the points. The magnets in the motor are broken. About 1/3 of them are removed, and the motor still works!!!!! Try it with the motor removed, but plugged in. See if it even trys to turn. You may want to check the wires with your volt meter when you hit the 4x4 button. Check the motor wires (yellow & orange). With that round disk removed, I checked the continuity with those 6 pins, and five wires to ensure they were connected. Also, try disconnecting the 3 plugs on the computer in the back, and see if it will "reset" that computer. Also check to see if you are getting juice at the plug when it is plugged in. Maybe it is loosing connection at the plug? If all else fails, maybe it is the computer in the back. I have shifted mine with pliers before. Not a good method though. What year is your explorer? I have a brand new shift motor out of a 98 lying around.

I still have auto hubs on mine, but I needed them this weekend, turned them on and still no front wheel drive action going on! I look under the vehicle while holding onto the steering wheel(I know, I know,....)as I got the back going and the front driveshaft is turning, but the front wheels aren't and to top it off, I got the back of my head plattered with mud. I figure the hubs are gone... manuals will be installed shortly. BTW, with a little creative driving I still got out in 2WD. :)

Goober, you still dont have manuals yet, with a truck that big? man you are crazy! my truck is stock and i have manuals on. got stuck once bogging with aotu hubs. out they went. havent gotten stuck since.

reply on year of truck

my truck is a '93 4.0L 4DR. will a shift motor out of a '98 fit a '93?

I doubt it. It is exactly the same as my 91. It will bolt right up, but the plugs are different. So I cut mine, and spliced it in. All the wires are the same colors, so it wasn't hard. But when I tried it, it clicked about 10 times, and the motor tried to work. It wiggled back and forth about 1/8 of an inch. So I "THINK" the computer must be different on the 98. The parts are not interchangeable from the motors. The motor itself is held on by 3 small screws vice 2 long bolts. And the round sensor (disk) is plastic vise metal. And you can not get inside to those 6 prongs. Its a molded plastic disk. When you remove it, there is the gear under it. I ended up getting my old motor to work. I am really unsure if this 98 on will work on the old style Explorers. Its too bad... it's a brand new motor. Came right out of the Ford box!
