OK, I have a '02 ford explorer. 84k miles on her. My 4x4 light started flashing this morning. Slowly, about 7-8 times then off for probably 2-5min then back on again.

After work, I start my car and no flashes but 4x4 is locked. The 4x4 light is off, i can't turn...****. I turn anyway and drive her home. (I am beginning to hate this car)

Half way home she pops out of 4x4 and the light goes back to flashing. Great, at least I can drive again.

I turn her off. Then turn her back on and she does the same thing, locked in 4x4 with no light. Eventually unlocks 4x4, the light starts flashing again and drives 'semi'-normal. What I mean by that is it feels like something is different, no sounds or anything, I cant put my finger on it. This seems to be the pattern every time i turn the car on and off.

Now, I searched the hell out of this forum, I know it comes down to a few things. One of them being the control module. I am no mechanic or car guy. I am smart, a computer engineer, but I definitely do not have the time/energy to tear into my car if its anything other then the control module. So is there a quick fix? I don't need 4x4 at all. I just need to drive. I am a broke ass college student close to graduation with no money living off loans. 350 dollars for a new shift motor would be a killer to me. I will buck up and pay it if I have to. I am borrowing a friends car for right now, I wanted to see what you all think before I go take it into the shop.

Thanks a bunch, Cameron

turned out to be just a speed sensor or something. The ground was loose. They replaced it and charged me 230.

I really appreciate all the input, you guys were a lot of help.
