After driving my newly acquired 97 Mounty about 3000 miles, it developed the famous Cam Position Sensor squeak. I searched the forum on this, then took the tension off the serpentine belt to make sure it wasn't the water pump, etc... the noise stayed the same with the belt off.
I decided that this was one noise to not ignore, because if the CPS were to seize up, I risk damaging a great running 5.0. So I started with the not-so-easy removal of the coil pack. Removed the bolt that holds the CPS down.... then could not figure out how to get the CPS loose. That HVAC line is in about the worst possible location - no amount of gentle prying and not so gentle cursing would get it to move.
So I am attempting some "redneck engineering". Since the CPS's squeak problem is caused by lack of lubrication, I decided to lubricate it. I drilled a small hole in the top of the plastic cover, tword the back so as not to damage the sensor. Put everything back together, then put a few drops of 10W-30 in the hole I had just drilled.
Let it sit 30 minutes, then drove a few miles, no noise!!! Hoping that the first few drops of oil ran down the shaft, I put in a few more drops, then put a piece of duct tape over the top to seal out moisture and dust.
I suppose that time will tell if this actually works. I figured that the worst that can happen is that the oil gunks up the sensor and that kills the engine. But that would be a lot better than the CPS seizing and stopping the oil pump! It seems to be a magnetic type sensor and not an optical one, so maybe a small amount of goo won't cause any trouble.
