5.0 Exhaust system

aren't race mufflers illegal? I told them I wanted it dumped right at the muffler.. they told me it'd sound "like ass" w/o pipes behind it.

I told them when I had it done.. I wanted it to look sporty, but not too aggressive. I gave them a pic of someones truck off this forum and showed them what I wanted.

I told them not to do 3" tips.. cos I was afrad it'd look like this

Yeah, Yeah, no offence to the owner, but that guy did just about every ugly thing you can do. The tips stick out about 6" past the bumper. Is that so you can slam your shins into it or is that part of the "bling, bling" definition?

My tips are 3" slash cut and IMO, dont look too big. In fact, If I was gonna do it again, I'd get 3.5". My friend just got pretty much the same setup I did on his 95 explorer and the 3.5" tips look really nice.

These are mine...

those are 3" tips? they dont look anywhere near that large.. I would have guessed 2.5 at the biggest

well.. if anyone wants to donate to the "stop darkfox1 from *****ing" fund.. I will need about $6k :P supercharger and exhaust SHOULD do it.

lol

damn that explorer was fugly, but oh well, his tips stick out that far because it looks like his tips are 24" or larger and they are welded like right at the end of the pipe. Man, go ahead and bang your shins on those puppies when their hot.

3.5" tips look very nice on a dual exhaust Explorer, your pipes are way to small and is resticting not only performance but also the aggressive sound of the flowmaster. I hope you were kidding about shops charging $2000 for an exhaust:confused:

The 1 chambers aren't illegal on the street, but they are insanley loud on a 5.0 or 4.6 (both sohc and dohc), a friend of mine had the 1 chambers w/ an h-pipe on his 01' Cobra, talk about aggressive and you can forget about having a sleeper, ended up replacing the setup with a Magnaflow x-pipe and Magnaflow Cat-Back. Thats one of the main reasons I'm getting an 02' Mounty, I love the mean, burbly sound of the 4.6 V8 and the fact that the truck friggen hauls stock.

the last thing I want my 5.slow to do is make more noise as it gets passed by a geo..

stainless steel exhaust systems are $1000 for prebent.. cstom bent is gona cost more.. plus welding.. and 4 new cats.. and headers.. its all gonna add up to a goot $2k or more.

hell these 2" aluminum pipes and the muffler all isntalled was right at about $300..and that was just a cat back

Get rid of 3 cats and keep 1 as the Explorer cats are already high-flow, get 2.5" or preferably 3" dual pipes and 3.5" tips and you'll be extremely happy with the aggressive look and sound as your 2 1/4" pipes aren't letting that flowmaster have it's normal growl. Plus it would only cost about 300 at least here, why would you want to spend 2000 on a stainless system thats not worth it? Just get some FMS headers along with the xhaust and that should bring back the 80hp and 2cylinders your Mounty is missing;) :D

$300 for a custom bent stainless steel exhaust system and stainless high flow cats? 3" all the way? I'm all for that.. I want stainless cos I'm sick and tired of rust.

I have 170 peak RWHP.. thats normal for the 5.slow

btw.. what size collection tubes do the ford motorsport headrs have?

i just got back from meineke.. and the guy said that for my 5.0... it has dual 2 inch in, with single 2 1/4 inch out right now. he said it would be a good idea to get a flowmaster with duel 2 inch in and duel 2 inch out because the 2 inch out wouldnt rattle like the 2 1/4 or 2.5 inch out. He said he did a job on his brothers expedition with 2.5 pipes out and it rattles alot. does that mean he didnt do a good job? he also said 4-5 hours labor and about $350. i said heck no since im supplyin the muffler and tips. i found some other shops that gave me an estimate of 250-300 for labor and pipes. one last question.. should i go with duel 3 inch tips or duel 3.5 inch tips?
98ford.. canu post pics of ur firends setup? so i can compare between the 3 inch and 3.5 inch tips

rattle? as in popping when you accelerate? or rattle as in.. the pipes bang around? I can't go over speed bumps too fast with my current setup cos my driver side pipe hits my bumper.. its quite embarassing

i think rattle as in popping sounds probably.. thats what he said.. and i didnt think i wanted to talkt o him much more after he said that and to use 2 inch piping :p
anyone know how much of a difference mandrel bent pipes are to regular bent pipes? is it that much of a difference? i cant seem to find anyplace that does mandrel bending

If the gibson might be to quiet i'm all for it....my X is used for business....its not sound i'm after....I 'd like to have some better mpg and a little more 50mph+ power...

Thanks so much for all the posts....I may ditch the gibson muffler if its way to quiet and go with a flowmaster...i have 2 laying in my garage...2 chamber ones from a catback mustang system....The only sound i want is a light beefy noise so you can tell its a V8 :)

I'm gona do before and after sounds and make them into mp3's for the board....i'm even gona do one with it open with no exhaust :)

I'll try to get a pic of my friends this weekend.

no one go with single exhaust

PLEASE!! dont listen to the guys at meineke

have duals and my spare tire is still under there.

the reason why i said you have to take off the spare is because i have 3" stainless steel tips that are 24" long and they cant fit between the spare and the leaf!!!:p

i wouldnt say dont go with a single exhaust. my gibson cat back is everything ive wanted in an exhaust .. its definetely brough the extra power i was looking for, it sounds good on the outside, (people know i have it because they are always turning to look when i drive by) its not super loud, and its perfect if u use it for business and u have clients. The gibson is an excellent system.

why would you say "no one go for single exhaust" single exhaust is a great choice for anyone who wants all the performance from their exhaust without the extra $$$ for the dual exhaust look. i say go for whatever look you want from your exhaust. any good shop should be able to create just about anything you want, its up to the buyer to come in with an idea of what they want done.

i have a very simple straight back exhaust system on my truck and it seems to work fine. i did it that way because i wanted to keep it cheap, fairly quiet, and simple so that my other mods would take center stage and so that i would have more money for those other mods. however, if i could do it again i would do duals, but with a single muffler (the flowie witht the x-pipe built in) and i would put chevy ss style rectangular tips on it and have them exit out the rear passenger side. but that really doesn't matter.

the point is- on a 5.0 you need to make a certain amount of airflow to attain maximum performance. a single three inch pipe is pretty darn close to the right amount of airflow for our trucks, but so are 2.5 inch duals and any combination in between, just figure out where you want it to exit etc. and make it happen with the proper amount of flow.

this confuses me.. if a sinlge 3" is good.. wouldn't technically 2 1.5s do the same thing? I mean.. why do you need bigger pipes for duals for total size over single?

well, figure out the area of a circle of each size.

area=3.14 times the radius squared so 7.065 for three inch single

and total area of 2.5 inch pipes is 9.8125

and total area of 2.25 duels is 7.948

2.0 duels are 6.28

i'm not sure why most people go with the 2.5 inch duels rather than the 2.25s, but it seems to work and that is why i'd recommend them. however, there is no need for more than an total area of 6.5 or 7 for our explorers. (the are needed can be calculated by complex flow rate calculations that i'm not going to attempt to explain here) .

expo5.0 nailed it. 5.0's along with basically any V8 with duals need at least 2.5" pipes, otherwise your gonna be restricting the engine. You won't ever see a Mustang with dual 1.5" pipes:p

If you had dual 1.5" pipes you'd have one heck of a bumble bee/buzzy exhaust note on a V8. V8's move a lot of air and you need to be able to exhaust that air fast and efficiently which releases hidden power and torque becasue of the increased efficiency.
