Sorry newbie fail this thread is also in the stock portion of the forum please disregard was meant for modified section... anyway just picked up a 1998 2wd 5.0 limted last week surprisingly in mint condition with 148k leather seats have not one tear or crease original paint job is perfect must have been garage kept its whole life I'll post pics soon as soon as I figure out how to. The engine runs very quiet and smooth trans shifts perfect no oil or trans leaks everything on it works!! I got it for 3400$ after driving it 2 days cel came on so I'm hunting down an evap leak shouldn't be to much trouble with the info I've read on the forum. Needless to say ive now become an explorer enthusiast

I got an estimate from a local custom muffler shop to run 2 in 2 out duals with a generic flow master for 400$ Cash with stainless tips. That's keeping all 4 cats as well. Does that seem reasonable? I live in FL I'm not worried about any inspections

As far as an intake guess the only hope is to wait for a Mac to show up on eBay or does anyone know another outlet to score one? I thought about just getting the MAF adapter and building a box out of sheet aluminum that's basically what they did on my dads 07 Shelby mustang

Any tips on preventative maintenance or things to look out for to keep it going strong. though about going ahead and replacing some hoses or solenoid Relays and or switches if I could find some that seem to go out regularly. Very happy to have found this forum thanks for any responses

That about right using a junk knockoff. In my shop that would run about 5 using a real flowmaster

That's about what I paid in South FL for my duel setup on 5.0, as far as intake I gave up on finding a Mac and just removed the silencer and cut the front of the box open and replaced the filter (have an AEM filter in there now I think)

I did the same with my intake. Opened up stock box is better than a hot air intake anyways

I was thinking get the MAF adapter the build a sheet aluminum box in the corner of the engine compartment just up to the hood my dads 07 Shelby mustang came with something exactly like that.. Just seal it off from the rest of the compartment an no heat to your intake air really easy to do if you got materials and time I did the same thing on my ranger I'll post pics soon

Welcome, and do build your own air cleaner. The best others are the Volant and the MAC. The Volant is better because it's larger, an actual air cleaner box that fits the space, and has a removable top. I have that in my 99 V6, and it can be used for the 302 and made to work with the stock inlet hose. I have a nice Amsoil EA filter in that one, it cleans very well.

I have a large universal Amsoil filter to build an air cleaner for, to fit into my 98 Limited V8 truck. I might have gotten too large of a filter, it's an oblong shape about 9" long and 5x6ish ovaled. I haven't begun on that box yet, so any pictures you can post here will help.

For exhaust, the entire stock system is awful, nothing worse exists on anything. The manifolds are the weakest link, the single exhaust after the cats are next, and the cats of course are two many and too small. The best first thing to do is find two mufflers of at least 2.5" size, which can be stacked and not thicker than about 9". Bigger will fit but it begins to hang out below where the frame shows. There's almost three feet of space for mufflers.

Fit two tail pipes, whether they run out the side, or where the spare goes, or dump below, or best spend the time to relocate the rear brake line and emissions line and hose.

Just the stock 302 needs more airflow than a single muffler provides. Look at any specs on a single muffler of any type, and compare it to any two mufflers of any type. Two flow a lot more than one, and the tail pipes are the same deal, total area decides airflow. Stock Mustang 302's have two 2.25" tailpipes, which are way better than a single 3" pipe. What do performance cars run for tailpipes, total area?

The exhaust manifolds are a whole different subject. Nothing available is a great choice, so stock or fabricated is the real choice. Have fun with the truck in any case. Regards,
