5.0 rattles

My 1996 5.0 liter engine rattles sometimes upon acceleration, particularly when under load, such starting off when towing. Seems like the sound is on the passenger's side. Truck has 91K on it. Would appreciate some good advice as to problem and solutions.. Thanks Mike

Check your Catalytic Converter heat shields. They rust, come loose and rattle around. If it is more of a Ticking noise, check your EGR tube. They can form pinholes and make lots of noise... but that would be a more constant sound.

I have noticed the tailpipe has also become sooty. Use to be clean. Could this be EGR related? Where is the EGR valve on a 5.0 liter? I notice it on moderate/ harder acceleration. Thanks Mike
