5.0L Cummins 90-degree V-8

Cummins..YES. They are good motors.

The transmissions on the other hand CAN NOT handle the power. It has been proven time and time again in the diesels..

USUALLY, when someone goes so far to swap drivetrains, it is because the one you are swapping to is better in some way....

...but you chose a DODGE drivetrain... A DODGE DRIVETRAIN!!!!!

Dodge Trucks LOOK good....but that is it. Their Engines are CRAP. Their Transmissions are CRAP. Their Interiors are CRAP. And their Electrical Systems are....you guess it....CRAP!

Why not do a swap where the parts are RELIABLE!

My 03 Dodge has 110k and i haven't had to change a thing besides the battery. Tranny is in great shape, Interior to me is a lot better than others, Engine runs good, not the best mpg but its a truck.

My brother in law has an 02 F150 and i would take my Ram over his truck anyday of the week...

That weighs 1/3 of what the truck does. Could you imagine the handling!?

Dodge Ram 1500
Engine: 5.0L Cummins 90-degree V-8
*At least 320 hp and 500 lb-ft
*Aluminum heads and an iron block
*Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
*Cummins-built variable geometry turbo located in the engine valley
*Catalytic converter and diesel particulate filter (DPF)
*Common-rail fueling with piezo injectors
*Engine weight 710 pounds
*Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) through the use of liquid urea
*Chain-driven single overhead camshafts
*Six-speed automatic 655RFE transmission
*10 1/2-inch ring gear diameter in the semi floating AAM rear axle
MPG: (Diesel Power December 2006 issue titled, "New Cummins V-6 and V-8") A Department of Energy test found the 1/2-ton Ram delivered 24.6 mpg.......

Umm, I thought the 2nd gen explorer weighed about 4,000lbs (4dr). I'm not saying it would be a corner carver, but THAT engine doesn't way 1/3 of the truck, it's more like a bit over 1/6. Besides, what does a fully dressed 5.0L weigh? Gotta be about 400lbs.
If your going to all this trouble, you could setback the engine, to minimize the effect of the weight. Heck, it might handle better than a stock explorer. Of course, you can also do a coil over conversion, and just use the appropriately heavier rate springs.
Yeah, there's no way this would be "practical" but it is doable, if you have deep enough pockets, and a creative enough mind. You'll never get your money back out, but I bet you'd get a magazine cover or 2, if done right.
Keep on thinking. You'll never recongnize the good ideas, when they come, if you haven't had any "less than good" ones to compare to.
That's my wisdom for the night. I'm going to sleep now (ok, soon)

TOTALLY off subject....HOW DOES JTX have a YELLOW name?

Lmfao, I 2nd this...

Have you ever seen a diesel from a full sized truck? They're so big they have to take the cabs off to pull them out. Not to mention they weigh well over 1k lbs, so there would be tons of suspension/frame work just to support it.

How big could a 5.0L diesel really be? Aside from the turbo (which could cause some clearance issues and *interesting* exhaust routing on an Explorer) how much bigger than a 5.0L gasser could it be?! This is a 5.0L, not a 7.3L.

As mentioned, the engines are some of the best ever made, thanks to Cummins. Trans is weak at best for the application.

Ford is going in house on it's diesel here pretty soon actually. And as far as dodges they seem to be ok, my brother hasn't had any trouble with his, but like our 302 the 318 has been around forever.

Indeed, the new 6.7L scheduled to debut in the 2011 SuperDuty trucks. Lots of good info in this Edmunds article:
http://www.autoobserver.com/2009/09...truck-share-with-new-power-stroke-diesel.html

Should be around 400Hp, and 725lb*ft of torque (compared to 350Hp and 650lb*ft in the Navistar 6.4L)

And there shouldn't be any issues with pulling the cab to swap a turbo either. :)

That's one of the pluses in owning the Ford van - the turbo (and everything on the back of the engine) is easily accessible after removing the engine cover. But on the flip side of the coin, its a royal PITA to change anything on top of the engine - the fuel filter (in the "fuel bowl") for example takes almost the entire day because of the other stuff that must be removed. On the truck bodies, this operation usually takes less about an hour.

It is for a top secret experiment that may literally allow you to put a 7.3L diesel into an Explorer. ;)

Really big, our gasser 302 weighs around 400lbs, the diesel weighs a little over 700, so close to twice the weight, that alone should tell you that it's a lot bigger. And the gas 302 is squeezed into an explorer by the time all of the extra odds and ends are put in there.

nothing like a diesel engine

if you want to put a diesel into your x check out a 4bt cummins they are not too hard to do and you can get about 25mpg with them too. check out fordcummins.com

It's funny when ford gearheads(like me) hate on the cummins until they're told that cummins is partly owned by ford...

This was my first plan until I saw prices even on a used cummins 12V. So I have a 302 waiting to go in instead...
Diesel engines last a long time if taken care of... easy poweradders like chips and exhaust gain a lot of torque and some good hp.
It would take a fully striped 4dr with beefed up suspension or SAS... a plasma cutter, welder, sheet metal, etc... to make it fit... but I still dream of having a diesel powered explorer one day...
Someone's already put a diesel in rangers... the explorer has to be next.

My brother in law has an 02 Dodge 1500 5.7L Hemi.. still making payments

a year ago he borrowed our GMC 2500 6.0L for 6 months because his Hemi sucked a valve at 72K miles.... AGAIN

this was the second engine in his 1500, the first under warranty, the second... of course, not under warranty. $4300 later we installed a upgraded 5.7L local rebuild into his 72K mile truck and he finally made his last payment.

my experience with dodge (and its not just this truck, there are 4 different part numbers for a passenger side cv shaft for a 2001 Dakota V8 good luck figuring out which one fits and wont clunk/come loose in 4x4 until you try all 4 of them) well Dodge cars and trucks IMO I will stay away from

I am a Ford guy for definitely but when it comes to diesel id rather be cummin than strokin any day. My dad and I are trying to start up a hot shot bussines we are looking to get a newer 05+ Dodge 5.9 pretty soon.
