They're pretty solid, the stock exhaust manifolds suck, and are known to split in 2, and the egr tube has the same problem. It is a 302 like what was in the mustangs, Has gt-40p heads, gt-40 lower intake, and the upper is very close to the cobra gt-40. It's big problems are a bad cam, and the exhaust manifolds that aren't any bigger than a pinky.

I have a 97 5.0 that the water pump went bad, ground a hole through the timing cover and fried #5 rings. Could have been avoided if I was driving it instead of the other, I mean better half. When I rebuilt the engine I had to weld the exhaust header on one side as it fell in half. But don't get me wrong, this 302 is still the same awesome engine I've had in 2 mustangs and an F-150. Just differences in the intake and exhuast.

thanks guys, my dads '99 v6 f150 manifolds did the same, but that just gives me an excuse for headers

on my 99 the water pump went bad, and so did the timing cover gasket. but other than that this things a beast

on my 01 it is all stock on the motor internals and it has a little over 104k pushing 385hp with a supercharger and no problems at all with the stock manifolds

You mean other than the tons of power your losing to them from not having headers:D

lol just waiting for this winter when the new boss blocked motor goes in for the turbo setup then comes the tmh :)

well i know its been awhile since i posted this but heres an update, i didn't buy the explorer because it was only AWD and id rather be able to take it in and out of 4x4, i actually purchased a 1996 f150 a few weeks later, it too has a 5.0l 302 and is a super clean truck for its age, so not an explorer but i will always buy ford
