I recently purchased a 1999 XLT with the 5.0L engine. It goes pretty well for an SUV, but what are the basic performance improvements that many of you make to the 5.0 - I'm not looking to do aluminum heads or anything like that.

Does the K&N air filter give much better performance than the stock unit - and is the K&N unit that replaces the whole stock air box worth its cost? Thanks.

I've got a Grantelli MAS ordered that should be here this week. It's supposed to provide a noticable increase in power. I would of bought a air filter and new exhaust first but I got a good deal on the MAS so I went ahead and got it.

The K&N unit that replaces the whole air box is good but there is a cheaper alternative called the KKM True-Rev 9 ( www.kustomz.com ) that is less than $100 dollars and gives the same performance. The only downside is that its not Smog legal so if you have vehicle inspections in your county it may not pass but you could just put the old box back in unitll you pass then put the KKM back in. I'm getting ready to order a KKM and get a Flowmaster exhaust put on before I run off to college...

Usual performance upgrades include:
KKM True-Rev (www.kustomz.com)
Performance Exhaust (gibson, flowmaster, borla, etc)
Superchip (www.superchips.com)
Mass Airflow Sensor (www.granatellimotorsports.com)

get yur self a borla those are awesome. go for a throttle body. a chip a k&N even a supercharger (REALLY BIG POWER GAINS) and hopefully you'll have a troll car. his 96 explorer has 500 hp! go to the explorersportruck.com and check out william rolonates truck its bad ...very bad!

OS1KNE, the drop-in K&N gave me slight improvements in HP, and a nice improvement in MPG. I added a Superchip, and while there was a definite seat-of-the-pants improvement in HP, I lost the MPG increase of the filter (maybe because the addition of the Flowmaster 50 makes me put my foot into it a little more..lol). I'm kinda bummed right now though because I took my Ex to Ford recently for a repair, and while it was there, they noticed that Ford had come out with an ECM upgrade, so they automatically did the upgrade. Needless to say, that changed my ECM code, and now my chip doesn't work, so I have to send the chip back to have it re-burned.

Flowmaster 50 series. i just put mine in today... SuWEET!!! i love it so much.

Yeah, I did the KKM and exhaust first...definitely noticeable...and a good cheap start, not to mention your X will sound meaner
