i have a 92 2 wd explorer sport i bought a 92 ranger for the tranny in it because a few people told me that the tranny were the same..well i pulled my tranny out and went to pull the tranny out of the ranger i noticed the starters are in different place...cant i just change the cases out and still use that tranny???

Was the truck a 4cyl Truck? My '91 Ranger 4cyl has the starter on the passenger side, and my friends '91 Explorer has the starter on the Driver's side.
This is the info that I know: The mazda 5 speed has an integral bellhousing, meaning that V6 trannies are for V6s and 4cyl trannies are for 4 cyl. The bell housings patternes are different between the two. The main difference between 4.0 trannies is the gearing is a bit higher than other v6 trannies to make use of the 4.0 extra torque. The tranny that you want can come out of either an explorer or ranger with a 4.0, you can also use a mazda tranny from a 2.9, with the different gearing, and I am not sure about the 3.0, I've been told the bellhousing is different from other v6s and the 4cyl. Sorry such a long post, hope it helps though.

also, I hear the internals can be swapped, but I would try to find a 4.0 tranny any way. just my opinion.
