Well my tranny likes to be difficult when shifting into 1st from a dead stop and it also like to be difficult (grinding) when shifting into 3rd while driving (around 25 to 30mph at about 2000 to 2500 rpm). Is this a common problem with Fords? And how can I fix it?

Real fix, replace the clutch, throw out bearing and slave cylinder. You may be able to help it changing your transmission fluid to synthetic.

I have a 1994 XL 4 door 2wd with the same tranny. It blew when we towed a camper, and I put a new one in. got a dud that time! Sent it back, got another and it was fine. The clutches and slave cylinders on this trans are junk and don't last too long. Synthetic ATF helps from what I understand. have a good one

ive noticed that when i throw the clutch in and put the car in neutral, i can rev the engine a lil bit (not much just like from 900 to 1500) and get it to free up almost instantly.

it works like 70% of the time, and saves a lot of frustration and mad people behind you.

Same problem I was having... Replaced Clutch Plate, pressure plate, and throw out bearing.
