Ok, pulled the pan to put in my New VB and wow big chunk of metal in the bottom of the pan. So, looked in the book and up in the tranny and saw that it's part of the intermediate band...What now? Should I replace the tranny or can I replace the band with little effort? And if I replace the tranny should I also replace the Torque Converter as a precaution? Any advice will help.

Thanks

Is the part from the band, or just a band strut? You have to open the entire transmission to replace the band, but you could reinstall the strut with the valve body removed. Those parts won't fall out unless somebody messed up doing a band adjustment. Most likely the band broke. You should always replace the torque converter when rebuilding the transmission as well as flush out the cooler.

It's definately a broken band...are there any upgrades for the transmission itself and not the Valve Body? I got a few quotes for around $1400 for a complete rebuild of the transmisson and the torque converter installed...how does this sound? The one guy was telling me that the transmission has quite a few upgrades but i'm not sure about that.

Thanks

Other than the band, is he rebuilding it with soft parts only? A hard parts rebuild would cost you a lot more than this. There are other upgrades from Sonnax, and shift kits which are available to upgrade the valve body.

There are not many upgrades to the 5R55E, though the VB has a few. If you can find a welded front planetary that is a good upgrade. I'd also, as a matter of course, replace the 6 pinion rear planetary as well. Definitely new sprags as well.

He is including the VB upgrades. But, I think I might buy a rebuilt 5r55e on EBAY from Tranzparts....Does this sound like a good idea...just search ebay for the 5r55e and look for the painted one for $550 starting bid. I really need some input on this one.

Thanks

That's $550 for a starting bid. Then add $125 for shipping, another $100 for a core deposit, and another $125 to ship your old transmission back to them. Assuming you get the entire core deposit back and you win the auction at $550, you're into the transmission for $800.

You still haven't pulled your old transmission out or installed the new one. If you can do that yourself, you might come out ahead.

Does anyone know if Tranz-parts is a reputable company?

I was his first customer online. I think he is an ok guy to deal with. If you buy here tell him Glacier sent you - his first internet customer. He will probably kiss you full on the lips. Or add $20 to the cost.

Understand this is an old thread, I know I can replace the band strut on the adjustment side. What about the servo side? Currently in process of doing the A1JE servo fix, had to drill the broken intermediate servo piston out of the bore. I've removed the valve body and found the adjustment side band strut is gone and assume the servo band strut has become dislodged. I can spin the band 360 degrees and it is all in one piece. Trying to avoid dropping the whole thing. I too am from Long Island. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
