Ok, here goes,

I have a 2000 Explorer, 110,000 miles with the 4.0 5r55e tranny and it is having the 2 - 3 shift flare issue's but they just got a whole lot worse. Before it would take just a short time but you knew it was there, now it seems like a solid 2 seconds before it shifts.

Fluid looks ok, no particles that I can see. It is still a redish/light brownish color but could use a fluid change.

It has thrown a code but the tranny place I took it to said there was none and of course wants to do just a rebuild. Turning the truck off and back on gets rid of the light and out of limp mode. My OBDII scannner does not pick up a code either, but it is just a cheapo 100 dollar unit.

My question is, when the light is not flashing it drives perfect except for the flared shift, can I replace the valve body and solenoids and probably fix this or should I go for a rebuild? The rebuild is qouted at 2600 which is probably pushing the lower limits of the value of this thing so I am very hesitant on going that route. There is the option of a used tranny as well.

I am pretty good with engines and have done a few tranny swaps, but nothing 4x4 or ever going into the tranny. Never even looked at a valve body but I got to figure something out, this is the wife's truck.

Just looking for some advice. Are there any vendors who sell a rebuilt valve body or something that I could do myself?

I would definitely do further investigation before considering a rebuild - There is a good chance the problem is in the valve body. If you haven't already, you should read This Threadhttp://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140987

I have a 2000 which was having the same problem - it had about 90k miles at the time. Using information mostly found in that thread I was able to cure the problem by rebuilding the valve body. Once I got the valve body out, I noticed the lower plate gasket was blown in two spots. Ford has a new part with stronger bonded gaskets. There is also a TSB kit for the valve body and I would recommend a shift kit while you are at it. I only replaced the EPC solenoid for good measure - I don't think there was anything wrong with it or any others. Don't forget to change the filter while your in there :)

I would say if you do your research you would be able to pull this off fairly easily. I am a college student and have no mechanic training and little experience working on cars, and I was able to pull this off in a couple of days.

One of my concerns is a clean space to work with, don't really have one right now.

Is it really needed to rebuild the valve body? I have read through the thread and it is somewhat intimidating.

Is there a place or vendor where I could buy a rebuilt VB with the new solenoids and just do a R + R?
