Pulled the transmission to replace the torque converter on my 01 Sport Trac and the input shaft fell out when I stood the transmission on the bell housing to clean it.

I can get it to seat in the drive gear and have the new torque converter sitting at the proper depth, but the fact that it's not held in bothers me.

It has different depth splines on the ends and there's a brass bushing. Here my my question:

Which direction goes in the transmission (longer or shorter splines)?

Where should the bushing sit, and do I need to replace it?

Is there anything holding the shaft in that I could be missing?

TIA!

Totally normal, they always fall out like that when you stand the trans up

I’m 90% sure the end w the brass goes in first but we should confirm that …
Can probably do that with a flashlight see where the brass bushing is supposed to ride

Still seems odd. But I did find my answer for the direction of the shaft in this build sheet. Also according to it it's the stator bushing, I assume if it's in there somewhere I can send it lol

Just made a picture of a spare pump and the bushing came out, but it has no play.

Good luck.

Trans was okay before the converter replacement? Why are you replacing the converter?

Converter was chirping, didn't engage, I could get the truck to barely move with a lot of RPM in 4L.

My gamble is it's just a dead converter, so I'm replacing the $100 part, if it's a bad transmission I'll know soon enough.

How was the fluid? Any Glitter in the pan or
Just Black clutch material?
You can cut the old filter open and have a look at the media
Fingers crossed!
