Hello all,
First i must say thank you to all of the folks who have posted such a wealth of information on this site. now to my problem.
I have a 2000 sport 4.0 SHOC 4x4 5r55e. o/d light was coming on got some nasty flair on my way to work so ordered rebuilt vb. figured do the job on weekend. next day drove out of drive way hit 3rd gear and total free rev. im going no where. towed to garage waited for vb to arrive and did swap of vb yesterday. needed new dip stick tube replaced that too. got her fired up and still no go just free rev. when i shut her off i hear a hallow rattle as engine stops running. Torque converter? Rattle sounds kinda like big metal object tapped with a wrench.

I have the same problem can anyone suggest a solution?

Greets,

I am a trans repair newbie, and I don't have a newer elec trans...I have been working on my A4LD and reading up a lot....

If your OD light was flashing I would check for stored codes...any info is good info and since your trans has electronic controls...if an electronic system in a vehicle that new has an issue...it usually will tell you if you ask it to.

But barring an electronic prob, some common issues that I have heard of are:

Broken flexplate...but if your engine turns over you should be able to eliminate that...

TC , but from what I have read, they usually have more symptoms before they go, unless the insides just come apart...in which case you would prob have had a lot of metal in pan? since you didn't mention that I would assume the pan was relatively clean?

When you torqued VB, you used an inch pound wrench and torqued to spec?(since you had prob before change, obviously this prob isn't it...but this is critical to VB operation, so it's a good thing to confirm and eliminate :-)

That brings you I would think to the front pump, which if it fails would mean you have 0 pressure.

(in my case I was running down freeway at 70mph, my eng revved...and nothing, no engagement in any gear...no big noises when it failed, but when it idled I could hear a low thumping kinda sound....regardless of being in gear or not....when I tore my trans down, the small ring gear inside front pump was broken in 3 places, other than that all damage and wear was pretty much normal for what you would expect...I am assuming thumping sound was TC or Pump shaft turning inside busted gear..)

If you want to get a better idea a pressure check would be good... I tested mine before I pulled it and had 0 in all ranges P, N, etc... that pretty much pointed at pump, since TC/Pump produces pressure at idle in P and N, I think that unless TC is not turning pump at all, which I would think would mean metal in pan... you should have some pressure unless pump has failed.

A pressure check would tell you a lot, since 0 pressure eliminates issues past pump.... I think...maybe someone more experienced can give you better advice!

Obviously I am not mentioning major tear in VB gasket , or VB since it happened before you did VB change and you have done that now...

Don't know if any of that helps you at all.... but I wish you Luck solving your Issue!

Respects,
Ragga

Ragga, Well first of all thanks for taking the time to write me a novel. haha. at this point the pressure test sounds like a great place to start even tho i have the one cat removed it is still worth trying even if i my go deaf in the process. the service manual says you need a alignment tool to install pump. that should be interesting to find. BTW the only real metal i found was under VB gasket and that was specks and a very few little slivers like fingernail clippings. these were trapped in 2 locations fore and aft on the top side of the gasket. seems like nothing more than normal wear. no chunks anywhere. do you know where is a good place to buy tranny parts?

Greets,
Sorry to be so longwinded ..;-)
That material sounds like bearing material maybe?

Personally I bought my stuff from Daaco, because a guy I know recommended them, and they have a store here in town... I got prices that met or beat online
I am on the road so I can't cut and paste links but I think Brooklyn bay has mentioned transmissionpartsusa.com( link?) and prices look good at bulkparts.com(link)... Good luck with pressure test and keep us posted!

Respects
Ragga
