well it no worky... and upon further review. tc is told to unlock when brake is depressed. command is overridden when manual gears are selected. so... me thinks what we have here... is a failure to communicate. or rather miss comunication. how ever brake lights still work, and no change when bpp is unhooked.

The shift interlock mechanism is disengaged when the brake switch is depressed in order for you to shift out of park. Does your brake switch have more than 2 wires? I remember reading one time that there are about 4 or 5 wires for controlling certain functions such as the brake lights, cruise control, TCC solenoid, etc on the later models. The older systems only had 2 wires, and were less complicated. Do you have a schematic of the brake switch circuit?

That's interesting info, i'll test that on mine tommorow and look into the swith you guy's refered too. Will yours go into 4lo without the peddle pressed?

hey tt996gt3 did you ever figure out you problem. Mine went out again and I replaced the valve body but that didn't fix the problem. I am leaning toward the reverse servo and am going to do the d-ring kit on it this weekend. I think that because the pressure is the highest in reverse/low that this might be the answer. Any input out there?

There are no chips or anything like that and I did not check spring action but I will now. Just push it up where the servo goes?

Yes. That part is called the servo bore. Make sure that the band is not misaligned. The tab of the band should be directly in front of the bore in order for the shaft of the servo to make contact with it.

Me Toooo

I have been following thread, I have exact same problems! 1998 ranger 2.5 auto. Dropped trans pan and checked solenoids, seemed like an electrical problem! All seemed good, put pan back on with new filter and oil, still same problem. Today ripped dash apart because i had no o/d light, checked bulb its ok,went further to check o/d switch and found broken wire sheared right off at steering column. Soldered them back together, now i can manually turn off o/d and light on dash comes on. Now with overdrive turned off I have firm movement in drive but still not in reverse. Something is not telling the pcm that the tcc should not be applied. Think maybee the trans position switch? I do have back-up lights, and starts in neutral. What about speed sensor on rear axle housing does it tell the pcm that the vehicle is not moving therefore it should not be in o/d.

Have not checked valve body gaskets, yes on rev servo and band. did gain drive today with od turned off, turn it on and drive acts the same as reverse(starts to move and then seems to slip.still think its the controller pcm or gem) If torque converter is locked up while in reverse would have low pressure ,little or no movement.

I've read on other forums similar problems in which they replace valve bodies, rebuilt transmissions etc, and still have the same problem at the end. I'm going to figure this out! Why won't the torque converter unlock itself? I have to turn it off manually in order for the truck to move in drive?

No. i havn't even started to find the problem (school/work, no time) with mine i picked up an ML430 at a good price, and may just sell/trade the Explorer, just put lift/wheels/tires not long ago as i planned on keeping it for trails would like to get some of that $ back. I'll check everything external before i get rid of it and keep you guys posted.

OK guys , I tightened up one of the bands and the damn think works fine!! only drove a few miles but it feels as good as it ever has..maybe this could help you other guys..

OD, didn't touch the INT. I have driven it a few times and it feels like before it went out, drives and shifts with no problems. I did have to screw it in alot though.
