Have a 2001 Ranger XLT 4.0L, 37000 miles driven around the equivalent of a large parking lot for much of its life so many shifts with the low mileage. The longest run it would get would be about 1 1/2 miles before having to turn around. Up until yesterday, no problems with the vehicle to speak of. While backing up, a slight pop occured and then no more reverse. All foreward gears are fine. After letting the vehicle sit for about an hour or so, we went through the shifts again and noticed that there was an "engagement" in reverse as the engine rpms dropped but still got no movement in reverse. After about 5 - 6 more shifts there was no evidence of any engagement again until letting it sit for 1/2 to 1 hour. Drained the oil (rather dark brown/red) dropped the pan but found nothing major in the filter or pan except a slight sludgy type film and some very minor metal . No codes found on the computer for anything electrical and visual inspections with the pan off doesn't reveal anything obvious. Any thoughts on the direction to go with this one would be much appreciated.
