I found the fifth shock with no problem. I just need to know how I order one. Is it the same size as the other 2 rear shocks or is there a special name for it? I don't see anything on Rock Auto about a fifth shock.

Thanks in advance.

i just replaced mine last week. i got mine off Amazon delivered for $28.88. the only other local place that could get it (Monroe brand) was Advance Auto parts and i'd have to special order it $37.99 + tax. give me a minute and i'll get the part # for you...

Monroe part number SC2958, it is called an axle damper or steering stabilizer, and no it is not the same as the other shocks on your vehicle.

Thanks I will check them out.

Axle Shaft Damper huh. Never knew it was called that.

i took mine off and pitched it in a trash bin, never noticed it gone afterwards, except when i wanted more rear flex,, without it there was more,
i put on about 150,000 kilometers without it on there,,

well, i figure Ford put it on there for a reason. granted its purpose isn't obvious to me, but for under $30 i'll go ahead and replace it as mine was leaking pretty badly and it made noise.

Maybe yours was so trashed already that it wasn't working anymore. That is why you couldn't tell a difference with it on the car or not.

Just playing devil's advocate. :)

There isn't any difference in feeling with or without it. Took it off when I did SOA and don't regret trash in it for I couldn't find any reason to keep it

Ordered mine from rock auto last week. It is in the drivetrain section.
MONROE SC2958 Axle Shaft Damper $ 25.79

no it was not worn out, i checked it, it was good,

Actually RockAuto's price is $24.79 + shipping of course. Amazon ends up being cheaper with SUPERSAVER (= free shipping)

Hey thanks I will get mine there also. Already have the other shocks in my Cart on Rock Auto.

I sure as heck could tell the difference after replacing my worn out one.

I know they put them on there for a reason. That is why I will replace mine. I think it has to do with the sway in the back end. Not sure but my back end(at least the Explorers) moves around going over Railroad tracks that have a slant on them. I go over those tracks 4 Times a day at 55 MPH.

My Monroe SC2958 leaked oil three month after it was installed. I tok it back to Advanced Auto and replace it. Since then 15 month passed, no leak.

My SC2958 has almost two years now and still looks like new...

As for what it does - it stabilize the lateral movement of rear end while in sharp turns. The back is "held in place" just by the leafs lateral stiffness. They are stiff in that direction, but will still slightly move left-right in turns (compared to axle position).
