Flat ground, Stock tires.
I cannot imaigine a Ford truck automatic that you cannot feel shift......
Well, mine will shift 1,2,3 and you can't feel it 'till it hits 4th if you keep the rpm's steady, and in just the right spot (just under 3k I believe). The only way you can tell is by listening and looking at the tach. Although I believe it might be better for the tranny if it shifts firmer because the clutch plates aren't slipping as much.

Well I figured it yesterday,

70mph with 235/75/15 tires, 3.73 diff and 0.79 OD ratio = 2400 rpm

tach reads 2500

thats pretty close.

Sweet Robb!

thats right I cant feel it shift, and I have watched the RPMs before and they dont change the stay at the same spot the whole time while driving and accelerating, What I mean by staying in one spot is that the RPMs dont drop down like other cars I have been in when it shifts. The just either climb because I add more gas or stay at a certain range when I keep my foot steady. Before I bought it and we test drove it my dad was driving it(didnt have my permite yet) he said it shifted into 2nd and i saw the tach and it went down as it shifted. The only time I feel any jerks or what seems like the tranny shifting is on the highway when I go to pass someone, I steep on the gas and it takes a second and I feel something like a jerk back wards and then I cant off. I just assumed it was the tranny downshifting. But I haven't felt that lately and I went on the highway yestreday and it didn't do it.

No shifts whatsoever?
Here's what I propose:
1) Put the transmission selector in 1 (manual low). Bring the vehicle up to 30 mph and note engine RPM. (If you need to run slower to avoid redlining the engine, do so)
2) Put transmission selector in 2 (manual 2). Drive at the same vehicle speed and note engine RPM (should be significantly lower).
3) Put transmission selector in D. Drive at same vehicle speed and note engine RPM (should be lower again).
That should tell you if there is any shifting going on.

alright I did what you told me, I put it in 1st and drove at 30 and it was at 3000rpms, put it in 2nd and drove a 30, 2500rpms, put it in D and drove a 30 and it was at 2000rpms. Does this sound right. And it does make the shift from 1st to 2nd thats the only one I can slightly feel, when it shifts it nothing dramatic, you can only tell if you are really watching for it.

I performed the same test on my '92 (3.73 axle ratio-31" tires). At ~30 mph
manual 1st gear -- 3100 RPM
manual 2nd gear -- 2100 RPM
D -- 1400 RPM
I looked up this spec sheet on the A4LD. Taking those gear ratios, I can calculate what the engine RPM's should have been based on 3100 RPM in 1st gear.
2nd gear should have been 3100*1.474/2.474 -- 1800 RPM
3rd gear should have been 3100*1/2.474 -- 1300 RPM.
Someone check my logic on that. Does that seem right?
Anyway, it looks like the transmission is at least shifting, though I'm inclined to say that it looks like something in your transmission is slipping.
Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition?
The next test might be to perform a similar engine RPM vs. gear test, but at a higher speed so we can check if the O/D is engaging. Try manual 2, D, then OD at 40 mph.
Another test might be a stall test on the torque converter. put the transmission in gear, left foot on the brake so the truck doesn't move, then romp on the accelerator and note what RPM the engine settles on. Don't hold the accelerator down for more than a few seconds and let the engine idle in park for several minutes afterwards to cool the fluid down. I don't have a manual in front of me, but it seems the stall speed is supposed to be around 2500 RPM. If the engine gets much above 3000 and stills seems inclined to rise, then abort the test.
I hope it helps, and good luck.

Ok, I did the test and this is what I got. In 2nd at 40mph the engine was at 3000rpms, in D at 40 it was at 2500rpms, and in OD at 40 it was at 2500rpms. Both d and od are the same rpms does this mean that it isnt shifting into overdrive? Or maybe it was because I wasnt going fast enough for it to shift into overdrive.

Our X, (1992 4x4 with 4.10 gears adn 32" tires) won't go into od until about 45.. so it is possible that it didn't go into OD on your truck becuase you weren't going fast enough..

Mine always shifts into O/D at 40. Try it again at 50, though and see if that makes a difference. If it turns out that it isn't shifting into O/D, then you need to determine which part of the O/D isn't working right. Is it because the computer is never telling the OD engage? Because of a bad connection between the od solenoid and the computer? A bad od solenoid? or something internal to the transmission (broken od clutch, dirty valve body, etc) that prevents it from engaging. There's a wiring diagram under the vehicle repair guides at www.autozone.com that show the od circuit so you can check them.

Update. The other day I was on the highway and felt it Shift into either 3rd, It must have been 3rd because I was in D, not overdrive. Then I shifted it into Overdrive, and was doing about 55mph and the rpms were at 2500. Does that sound right were they were supposed to be. Note this is the first time I felt it shift into 3rd, I also so it because the tach was at 3 grand and at the same time as I felt it the rpms went down a little to about 2500. When I start the truck and select OD and drive in that and then get onto the highway or even around town, I can not feel it shift from 2nd, nor do the RPMs drop they stay the same, and increase as I add more gas to go faster. But it did shift into 3rd in D. What could be causeing this, dirty ATF, or filter. If it is the filter, where do I find it to change it?

Any thoughts anyone
