I am still having problems finding a good performance exhaust for my truck. I found out that flowmaster only makes a 70 series muffler for 97-98 explorers. does anyone have this flowmaster or has anyone ever heard anything about this series? I am worried about it being too quiet. I want it to be noticible. Also anyone had any experience with Gibson or magna flow mufflers? how do those sound? anyone have any advice on which muffler i should go with? i really want to make this performance upgrade while i have to time and money to do it, so any advice would help me out greatly! :D

thanks a lot-
Kristen

Forget about the 70 series. Go to the place where you are going to get the exhaust done and ask them what size inlet and outlet you should get. Then order a Flowmaster with those specs. Get the 40 series (loudest) or the 50 series (second loudest) or a 40 series delta flow(about the same as the 50 series). Forget about the 70 series suggestion that is bullsh#t. A muffler shop will put on anything if you ask them to.

I got a 94 sport I got a 40 series Delta flow muffler with dual outlet. Then i got pipes running straight back to chrome 3 inch tips. Looks and sounds great. Not too loud just enough to set off a couple car alarms.

go with a cat-back instead of just a muffler...

I have a Borla cat-back and I am pleased with it. It is kinda pricey ($300+) but it is stainless steel and it will never rust out. I did the carparts.com 1/3 off coupon and it came out to about $235 w/ shipping. There are several other cat-back systems available for less $$$.
Here's why I got the cat-back instead of just a performance muffler...
On my stock exhaust there are two mufflers. Well, one is called a resonator... If you go to an exhaust place and had them put on a new muffler, resonator, and piping from your catalytic converter to the exit tip, it would cost between $200-$300. It would not be "performance". It would not be stainless steel like the Borla.
If you buy the muffler you want and take it to a shop to get it installed, well... they tend to be a little pissy about that. They will do it, but you will pay extra for it whether they tell you or not. And you are still left with the old resonator and piping.
With a bolt-on cat-back system, you can put it on yourself. The toughest part is cutting the pipe behind your stock muffler to be able to get your stock system off.
Also, Cat-back systems are supposedly designed as a unit with the muffler and piping size/configuration to work together.
Hope this helps..

When did you order your Borla from Carparts for $235 with the coupon? I just did a search for my '97 but they want $595 before the coupon. That is way higher than I am willing to spend on a Borla cat-back system. Does anyone else have a cheaper source for a Borla for my '97 2 door 4x4?

twas 03/30/00...

List-$342.81 ($100 off, 1/3 coupon was max $100 off)= $242.81 + $9.35 shipping = $252.16 Total.
I have heard it and the headers have gone up. Also, my '91 called for p/n 14343. It may be different for later models.

Way up is right. Looks like you got it at the right time. I just did a search using your part number and it went up to List price $551.24, my price $520.62. Yours went up by $200. Here is the quoted text from my search:

"PARTS FOR ALL VEHICLES
Results for part number 14343. If you need help finding parts, click here.
Please note that these parts may not fit your selected vehicle.

Holy Guacamole!!

That is through the roof!!! I'm betting the headers went up about the same. Guess we hit 'em a little too hard with the 1/3 off coupon.

Descion made!

Well for all of you that have been reading my posts about my descion on which muffler to you and whether or not to have it be a dual outlet, i have finally placed an order for a flowmaster 50 series today and should be recieving it on friday and hopefully have it on by friday night. I just wanted to thank you all for all of your advice. I am really nervous about this purchase because the guy at flowmaster told me that it will be extremely loud because it has a 3in outlet. Also i am nervous because the inlet and outlets are bigger than the stock one but i talked to a muffler shop and they told me that they can put sleeves onto the muffler to get it to the right sizes. I have to stick with the stock 2 1/4 in outlet and i am going to put a 3 in tip on it in hopes to lessen the inside noise. Anyways i just wanted to let you all know about my descions. I am still alittle weary about it but i will let you all know how it sounds this weekend. Thanks again for all your help and any more advice is still welcome.
