We have had a lot of snow this year and although my 99 Eddie 5.0 has not had any problems I think I would like to put a Traction-Lock in it. I have a new one that I bought years ago to go in one of my other cars and did not use it, problem is it is a 28 spline.

Can I just buy the 31 spline side gears and stick them in my new Traction-Lock assembly or is there more to it than that, is the carrier different?

I ask this question on a Mustang Forum but did not get very convincing opinions.

Thank:us:s
Mike

i do believe the carrier is different. besides, if you didnt know, with your truck being a 5L, it has a trac lock in it already.

^ all 5.0s came with a ls?

I'm pretty sure you are, most 2nd gens have a LS but I don't think it was standard for the 5.0
I think it's standard if you have the towing package but that's it

mine didnt have a LS in it from factory. my last 5L truck had it, so i grabbed it and will be putting it in soon

Not all 5.0s have Traction-Loc

Sorry you guys are repeating one of those belief's that is simply not true.

I purchased this vehicle brand new in 1999 and have had it until now it has 95K miles on it and it does not have Traction-Loc in it.

The code on the door tag for the differential is #46 =3.73 open, no one has altered this car as far as a differential swap and according to my owners manual their were other open rears also available.

I was hoping someone had a parts listing and could tell me if the carriers were the same part number between the 28 and 31 units.
Thanks for the responses
Mike

That's what I was saying :D I don't think your 28 spline carrier will work nor is it worth that kinda effort. Just grab a low mileage rear end at the junk yard with a factory ls and swap it. Then sell your open axle to a jeep

Only the Eddie Bauer and Limited came standard with rear Limited Slip. Axle codes with letter D.
I think that for XLT it was just an option.

Sorry

Sorry, SoNice my car is an Eddie and it was not standard on this car.
