87 Ranger problems

Hey all, got a 87 Ranger 4x4, auto,2.9. After warm up it wont idle or cruise but will only run at wide open throttle. Checked the cat, egr, fuel pump pressure and replaced fuel filter any ideas greatly appreciated. Also push button 4x4 will not dis-engage with the push button .Thanks all

Just a shot in the dark, but it could be your ignition module, which is located on the distributor.

VERY common problem on older GM's...the ignition module heats up, but typically the vehicle would just shut off when it got up to operating temp. I know advance auto can test them, just not sure of what make/models.

1st thing I'd do, especially on an '87 that doesn't have a working CEL, would be to pull codes from the computer. Easy to do with a paper clip and a voltmeter/test light. See stickies in EEC-IV forum.
