I was driving someone home the other day and i see a 88 ranger for sale. So i was like what the hell i'll check it out. I walk up to it and it has an rebuilt motor with 30k. So i look and see if its a stick or auto. it was an 5-Speed. I believe it is a 4.0, So would the trans be a t-5, or what is it. If its a t-5 or whatever how long do they usually last in rangers? I counldn't see how many miles was on it, but i'll get the # next time i drive by there. The things is it has a body lift, and the fenders are cut alittle. With that it could barely fit 31's. The body looks ok, but not good. It is a
ext-cab which is a BIG plus for me.

he wanted $3k for it. What do ya'll guys think about the truck, and if anyone knows about the trans let me know.

Check out www.therangerstation.com and they have a break down of all the trannys available in the rangers. The t5 was never available from the factory in a ranger. Advance Adapters makes a kit to swap them into the rangers. Also 4.0 didn't come in the rangers till 90 or 91. On my 86 I have 201K on the motor with just a set of head gaskets at 160K. The tranny is another thing. The origional owner had it rebuilt at 90,000 and then I had to have it gone threw at 195,000. so far so good now. Hopethis helps some.

Thanks for the help. I have been over to RPS and they are all about lowering and stuff. I'll check out that site. I never know the 4.0 didn't come in earlyier. I learn something every day. Thanks again. lata

The 4x4 encyclopedia I have says it could be a Mitsubishi 5-speed, or a Toyo-Kogyo. (I know, WTF?!)

ranger

I had a ranger '88 GT model they have the 2.9 liter 6 banger witha mitsubishi tranny..... great truxk i tore the crap out of mine and it just wouldnt die!!!!!! Then i just had to go and put a 5.0 in it heheh :) then it was really fun. The 2.9 mated to the 5 spd can easily do 110-115 mph on the interstate... fun lil truck with lots of weee built right in

115

cept when you are going that fast lil motor pulls like 5300 rpm..... they do leak oil from the front seal.........

I need the trans to last 2-3 years, which is only 25,000 miles for me. And then i get out of college, and here comes the 302, and t-5. But anyway thinks for the help.

BWT: Did they come with the 8.8 rear end? I hope so!!!! ANd
Did you have any problems with the heads

Nope 7.5 but you wanted an exploder rear with disks anyway right. I blew the head gasket in mine it pegged the temp guage 3 times when it happened. All i did was pull the head and put new gaskets in. I didn't resurface the heads or rebuilt any of them. I figured if I resealed the top end up real tight then I would have problems with the bottom end. That was 41000 miles ago so far so good. I have seen heads on ebay for about 50-75 bucks what ever that is worth.

Rock,
I just looked at your site, and do you have a 4Runner top on your truck?

I might buy this truck, just because i won't have to worry about the body, and hell it's cheap. The only thing that sucks about the truck is that it takes alot to out 33's. I like the truck because the inside looks damn good, but the outside needs some work.

I have no idea what type of shell it is. It was on the truck when I bought it. It is starting to get some stress cracks it from all the flexing, one of the windows is plexyglass sence i broke the origional when I rolled, and one of the latches is busted as well. I am taking the shell off in a few weeks when I get ready to bob my bed.

Matt, how much are you cutting off?

I am going to take out at least 12" and maybe up to 16. I am still trying to figure out what to do with the rear crossmember and may move some spring mounts around as well. I also want to somehow squeze a bronco 2 tank in some how as well. It might be tight cause I am going to take the body lift out as well. Hope the rear axle wont hit the tank I guess it will be just figure out as I go along and if it don't work put a flat bed on it. I will take alot of pictures of it as I go along.
