sorry my computer is tarded, i believe reverse requires less pressure, i may be wrong auto trannies are not my strong suit. drop the pan and see if you have any clutch pieces or metal shavings in there. that's about all i can think of

it so the tranny will shift to R , but it wont move down to the other gears? or it moves to the other gears and just doesnt operate? even if u dont use the skinny pedal it wont pull its own weight?

id 2nd the Valve Body Rebuild, maybe the pressure regulator is dead... or all the clutchs are just dead.... or could be torque converter...

ask yourself, is it worth rebuilding, or just donig a C5 swap...

wow black fluid , bet the bottom of the pan is covered with shavings...

This is pretty common, at least as far as I have experienced. Mine died that way.It would go into reverse easy at any time but I could get not get it into forward gear at all. After 20 minutes and constant revving it would start to slowly roll and then bang it would go into gear, drive it all day with zero issues, then back to square one the next morning. It got so bad it would take 30-40 minutes before it would go into gear. I bought another transmission off of craigslist and now 6 months later it is starting to do the exact same thing. I would just spend the money and rebuild it with a warranty or convert to 5 speed. Of course that's my $.02 Good luck.

al4d problem

my 88 br 11 had the same problem one of the seals in clutch pack was broke in half major perssure leak.i suggest getting a arld book, and pull the valve body
and do a pressure check per book on clutch packs. that should tell you were the problem is,did for me.
