89 ranger increase

i have an 89 ranger with a 2.9 litre 4x4. i am trying to rebuild as much as i can, and am wondering what are some cheap ways to add horsepower. i raced a 97 ford taurus witha 24 valve v6 and just barely beat him, looking for ways to just blow his doors off.

Fairly cheap/ easy ways...Exhaust, CAI (cold air intake), Headers...just some basics to get started.

i am in the process of redoing the exhaust, but i don't want to put on cats. does anyone know of headers that don't have the 3 hole bolts for the cats? maybe something so i can just go from headers to mufflers.
